Bill Maher stirs controversy with Tim Tebow tweet

So did I, and for a day or two after as well.

Good grief. You missed the whole point of my post didnt you? I’d label myself a conservative (but not the bashit crazy kind) and I don’t find Rush hilarious either, so its not really a point of view thingy, its an “I made a funny and that makes me right” thingy. Though it would make things a bit less obnoxious if he was actually funny more often.

I don’t understand the controversy. Are people saying Maher’s tweet was inaccurate?

…and if you watch football you might see Tim Tebow pray…

To be fair, this can be said of Maher’s comments almost all of the time. He wants to be funny and political. He only pulls off half the trick. John Stewart does the whole thing.

Still, Fox News is enraged by something somebody they don’t like said, stop the presses.

Tebow, you mean? I agree completely.

OK, but then what exactly is he doing when he is, umm, Tebowing? Isn’t that the entire point of the post-score gesture/prayer thing?

Maher isn’t just an atheist, he is an antitheist. All in all, I liked Maher’s point, but then I liked Religulous too.

Seconded. I like Maher. I always watch his show and think he can be funny as hell (pun intended). But this was jerkish behavior in the public sphere.

More accurately, he says he doesn’t ask God for on-field successes. But, yes, he thanks him when they occur. And he’s not constantly Tebowing when they happen either. He mostly just points to the sky.

I also find him annoying, but I think he’s mostly sincere and not ‘posturing’ at all.

Jesus normally would have had Tebow’s back. But c’mon, the Bills were getting 16 points and it was easy money for the taking.

Like you don’t know I was referring to Maher.

The description applies to both of them, so how was I to know who you were referring to? :stuck_out_tongue:

Tebow obviously hasn’t understood Matthew 6:6 in the least.

Here’s my assessment of Bill Maher. I don’t think this guy believes most of the stuff he says that makes him sound like such an asshole. He knows how to take the most offensive position on everything and use it to garner publicity and headlines for himself. Which stirs more controversy, which keeps his name in the news long after his peak as an actual comedian. If he hadn’t hit on the obnoxious asshole angle, nobody would remember who this guy is after the early 1990s. Every time his name starts to fade from public view, he makes another statement like this calculated to piss off the Fox News-types, which he knows it will, and get Bill O’Reilly to scream at him, which means Bill will mention Real Time several times, insuring that people will remember he even has a show.

He’s been on HBO for nine years now, and this comment was made on Twitter, not TV. It’s not a play for headlines, it’s just Maher doing what he does. He’s also tweeted this about Tebow in the last month:

I have every HBO channel there is and, honestly, I can’t even remember skipping past Maher’s show. I have never heard a single person reference him or his show. Who is watching him? What are his ratings?

I’m trying to find this, and it’s kind of a pain. I saw that one episode from the past season had 1.26 million viewers. He’s done around 200 episodes since 2003, so HBO obviously finds it worthwhile on some level or other.

Well, the show’s been nominated for a Prime Time Emmy the last 7 years in a row, so he’s being watched by somebody!

Us, for two. I think he’s hilarious.

What cheapshot has Tebow taken at anybody recently?

I consider praying in public and gesturing upstairs every time he manages to keep from tripping over his own two feet to be condescending, insulting, demeaning to religion (Christianity in particular) and a cheap shot at all the “unsaved wretches” that aren’t basking in God’s glory like Tebow thinks he is.

The description applies to all 3 persons involved in this scrap.
