I’m currently driving a 2002 530i and love, love, love it . . . however, she may be on the verge of a terminal illness (though she runs beautifully at the moment).
I’ve test-driven a few 328i’s and have been underwhelmed. My 530i, despite her advanced years, feels more solid, spacious, and “road-beasty” (6 inline-cylinder). I would like integrated navigation and cupholders, though!
I haven’t driven a 5 Series yet – the price tag has scared me off. Will a 5 feel more like my old 530i?
I’ll be looking to buy a certified used car with some warranty left (probably 2012 - 2015ish).
Any input appreciated!
I doubt it. Starting with the 2003 7 series, BMW started emphasizing technology and luxury over driving enjoyment. They’re still good cars to drive but nowhere near as engaging as the 1992-2002 versions were. That said, a new 5 will obviously be roomier than the 328 as it’s got a longer wheelbase.
One car I hear good things about (although I haven’t driven one) is Cadillac. I’ve know a few ex BMW owners driving them and they seem happy with the change.
I had a 2001 535i that I sold–loved it but it was getting to that point where it cost more to repair than it was worth. I bought a 2014 ‘used’ 320i with 3000 miles on it and love it. No it doesn’t have the power of the 535 but I am happy with it, it doesn’t have the bells and whistles the 535i had, but then again I never used most of them.
I will say the cup holders on the 320 are WAY superior to the crap ones in the 535. The air-conditioner/heater system is more intuitive in the 320 as well. Really the only two items I miss from the 535 are the heated seats and the auto adjust seats. If I had bought the 320 new I would have added those items. But for the price I paid for the 320 I have no complaints…I got a screaming deal on it!
