Bing Cherries

Ok, so why are Bing Cherries named such. I’m sure it’s not Bing Crosby, but I’ve been askes, so why…?

‘Bing’ is a named variety of cherry tree - I think it is quite likely that the variety is named after Mr Crosby - celebrities have a habit of getting plant varieties named after them.

I’ll see if I can find the facts though.

One pioneering gent was Henderson Lewelling, who planted sweet cherry orchards in western Oregon. In fact, the most well-known cherry variety, the Bing, was not named for a famous crooner or the sweet sound a small dinner bell makes, but for one of Lewelling’s Chinese workmen. Other sweet cherry varieties, such as the Lambert and the light-skinned Rainier also got their start on Lewelling Farms.
