Hey Washington (state), Thanks for the cherries!

Our cherry season in CA is pretty much over, so I was pleasantly surprised to see a whole new bunch of bing cherries in the stories last week and this. Courtesy of our neighbors up north. I have to say they are bigger, juicier and better than our locally grown fruit. So thanks Washington. You grow some damn fine cherries!! Keep up the good work.

You’re welcome!

(It’s been quite a few years since I personally had a hand in WA cherry production, but I can say that I’ve worked in the field, so to speak.)

In 1977 I was stationed for three months at Ft. Lewis, Washington. The whole post had cherry trees around. I could walk out the back door of my barracks and pick handfuls of Queen Anne cherries, the ones that don’t get all red but are yellow with a blush, like a peach. The trees had been around for a long time, because my father, in the early 1950’s, was also stationed at Ft Lewis, and it was he who told me about the cherries.

I’m sure there are lots of cherry stories the soldiers talk about there.

I grew up near there; dad was stationed at McChord AFB. Didn’t know about any cherry trees, though, and I don’t think I’ve ever had Queen Anne cherries.

I’m a little far from home these days, so I don’t know if Washington cherries make it this far east. I did find tart cherries from New York at the grocery store this year and made the best cherry pie I’ve ever had. (Figured a baker could appreciate that.)

FWIW, the apple harvest is starting.

I loves me some honeycrisps; ship a few down here, would you? They’re always better from Washington state.

I live in WA. I have an old cherry tree in the backyard, that produces wonderful fruit. Sadly a significant portion usually gets nabbed by the squirrels.

Forget the bing cherries - what you want are Rainier cherries. Yeah, they look a little odd, but they’re tasty.
