Cherries this summer

Here in Northern Virginia, they’ve been amazing, and amazingly cheap. This weekend they were $2 per pound at the grocery store, and as crisp and sweet as they ever are.

Is there a bumper crop this summer or something? I have no idea where they’re grown.

I’ve been noticing – and enjoying – this too. Used to be these cherries lasted only a short time, like a couple of weeks, especially the Ranier ones. This year I’ve been eating them for at least a month, I think, and the price keeps going down. I thought they all came from Washington state, but maybe they’ve started figuring out how to grow them in other places? Or it’s just a great year for them? Whatever it is I hope it happens annually!

They grow very extensively in Michigan and Wisconsin too.

I’m thinking there’s a bumper crop myself, because I’m seeing plenty of them here in Iowa. Oh, they always have them, but they are cheaper and more plentiful than usual.

Last year I found myself not enjoying cherries as much as I usually do, and was thinking that they weren’t as good as I remembered. But this year they are back to being absolutely delicious. My only problem is that they tend to upset my stomach, so I have to strictly count and limit my intake. At least that makes them less expensive for me.

Here in Washington, cherry season has arrived more than tlwo weeks ahead of schedule due to unseasonably warm weather for the second year in a row. Fortunately, unlike last year, this year’s crop is bigger and sweeter. I got a batch of Rainiers and Bings at a local orchard today.

Anyone know if this bumper crop will extend to sour cherries as well? I love cherry pie but it can be really hard to find the right cherries for it. I’ll start looking a little earlier in the year than usual.

I posted in my fruit thread, I’ve got cherries for the first time in 15 years.

We got some for $1.89/lb., and they are spectacular! Going back to get more.

I’m working my way thru my second big bag. For whatever reason, my husband won’t eat them, so they’re all MINE!!!

Takes me back to when I was a child sitting on the steps outside of my grandmother’s kitchen door, with stained finger and lips, eating a big pile of cherries - at least 55 years ago! The memory is so vivid…

That’s good to hear. In CA, the crop has been pretty low for some years now, and this year isn’t too much different. I hope you don’t mind us Californians sharing in your bounty.

Cherries so ripe and so round…

I opened this thread with you in mind. For some reason, the fact that you make cherry pie will stick with me forever.

It’s always nice to be remembered. I hope you’re well.

Oddly, I don’t get to make cherry pie very often. I love cherry pie, and I feel like with a bit of practice I could make it pretty well. (My apple pie is the stuff of legend.) I’m trying to pay more attention to my diet these days, so my next pie attempt will require:

  1. Tart cherries
  2. An occasion to share with other people so I don’t eat the whole pie myself.

Shakespeare on the Common is coming up in a few weeks. Spread out a blanket on the grass, invite a few friends, somebody else brings the coffee; that could work.
