Yep, I’m eating a bowl of cherries. Not a huge bowl, but a good sized one. Mine are bing, local in CA, but the season is about over. Nicely tart, with that flavor that can only be described as “cherry”. If I had some vanilla ice cream, I might cut some cherries up and mix them in. Life is pretty damn good when it’s a bowl of cherries!
Anyone else up for sharing the experience? Pull up a chair, get yourself a bowl of cherries, and tell us about it.
I am loving cherries right now, too! I can’t stop eating them. They are crazy cheap at the moment, too. There seems to be fruit stand on every corner. Can’t. Get. Enough.
My little cherry tree only produced 3 cherries this year (its only a year old). The birds got two and I got one. Best cherry I ever had.
We just got our first big crop of cherries last week from a fairly new cherry tree.
Here in Wisconsin, we grow sour (pie) cherries and so I made a quick cherry crisp. I don’t know what I did wrong, but it turned into cherry soup!
My 4 year old son decided to try some anyway (it’s his cherry tree), and pronounced it a “delicious failure!”
We ended up spooning it on top of vanilla ice cream and it was great!
Yeah, those are the cherries I’m waiting for. Some years I can find them in the stores here, some years not. If I ever have my own place, one thing I’d like is a few sour cherry trees.
I had a similar problem with my first attempts at cherry pie. There are a few things I do now to manage the liquid level in the filling.
Bings, Raniers and another variety I can’t remember (large, sweet, but a bit soft) are all in season right now. There are also apricots and peaches showing up. We bought a flat of marionberries today to make jam.
Is there a bigger difference in the culinary world between the taste of an actual cherry fruit and the mishmash of esters and whatever that makes up “cherry flavour”. I think not, although banana runs it close.
I have a cherry tree, but it must be a male. It was supposed to be female, but I don’t get any cherries. There are plenty of cherry trees in my neighborhood, so I think ample opportunity for some sexy time, cherry style.
I also have a Santa Rosa plum tree, and it produces wonderful fruit. Alas, the animals usually get most of it and this year they got ALL of it. Not a single plum for me. Some years I would get dozens. They are/were wonderful. Not quite cherry wonderful, but about the next best thing.
We’re consuming mass quantities of cherries in Mercotan Manor lately. 'Tis the season, after all. And we do love them. Fresh, dried, with strawberries or accompanying rhubarb in a pie. As a syrup over chocolate ice cream. Pitted and chopped and sprinkled over vanilla. But mostly just fresh, spitting out the pits afterwards.
I am planning to buy some sour cherries tomorrow to make a pie. A pie made with sour cherries is just DIVINE, you will never empty out a can of pink sludge pie filling ever again…But I do love the black sweet cherries. Is it true cherries or cherry juice contain something that can make one sleepy? I haven’t noticed myself, but that’s what I read someplace.
Cherry trees have no gender. However, some varieties need a pollenator variety nearby. Bings being one of those. You may not have the right pollenator variety in your neighborhood, or maybe something is eating your cherries.
I love cherries and will binge on them until I am sorry. For awhile. Then I forget. I guess it’s a good thing they have such a short season.
However life cannot literally be a bowl of cherries. Even if you have a literal bowl of cherries in front of you, that’s going to have to stay a metaphor. Just the way “literally” works. Or, dammit, should.
