It’s out tomorrow. Did I miss a thread, or am I the only person waiting for this?
I just pre-purchased it on Steam, looking forward to firing it up tomorrow.
I’ve been wondering the same thing.
No, you have not been the only one. I have to choose between studying and Bioshock. I don’t think reading case-law will prevail over being a people-drilling Big Daddy.
I’ve looked at multiplayer footage and was a little disappointed. Seemed rather chaotic and random.
If anyone gets the game in the future and wants to share their appreciation (as well as how long it takes to complete the game), please do so.
NO STORY SPOILERS OF ANY KIND please.
I’m looking forward to it, and just replayed Bioshock last month to get ready. I probably won’t be able to play it until the weekend though.
My interest is piqued. I still wonder how the multiplayer is going to work out.
I’m currently stuck on the first game, wandering aimlessly around in the medical area on what I presume is the first level. I have found the “fire hand” upgrade and now…I keep wandering in circles with my hacked security bot buzzing around my head.
This is a pretty cool game, though! Especially since I got it off Steam for like $11.
FoieGras,
Go downstairs, melt the ice that’s in the way with fire. Explore downstairs till you find another power. Use that power to grab something otherwise unreachable that’s also located downstairs.
Enjoy the toddler slaughter.
I guess I’m going to pick this up. We’ve got more snow coming in tomorrow, so this’d make a good game to help fight off the cabin fever.
I must admit… I’m not particularly excited about it. I think it’s primarily because the first one was just so damn intense that I kind of dread playing a sequel.
This (along with Mass Effect 2) is the primary reason that I want to upgrade my PC. My video card curls up and weeps at the very mention of the game. Go go tax return!
Not gonna happen for a while. My Xbox has (snif) given me an E74 error. Looks like it’s covered under the three-year extended warranty, so I shouldn’t be out of pocket, but I reckon I’m still out of commission for about a month.
Almost missed this. Have you met Dr. Steinman yet?
I was a big fan of Bioshock 1 and won’t be buying bioshock 2. The story doesn’t sound anywhere near as good and I am story-driven in my games.
But I still hope it’s good. I loved the first one, though I couldn’t play it more than once.
I am going to give away the first half an hour of plot:
You play a gamer (called “The Gamer”) who has paid £30 for a game because he likes to support creative types rather than nicking their output. He installs from Steam. He launches his game, which installs Securom and asks for his CD key, which Steam already knows. But what FPS would be complete without a hunt-the-key section, right? So The Gamer gets the key from Steam and puts it in Securom. The game launches, and treats The Gamer to a couple of minutes of unskippable intros. I think this is to create investment in the character of The Gamer, who to be honest already comes across as somewhat irritable.
In an unusual twist, The Gamer decides to play “single player.” At this point, the game appears to freeze, and The Gamer is catapulted into the alternate universe of Games For Windows Live. This is a meta-game in which The Gamer has to try to work out how to play his game, while pitched against GFWL’s minions of Baron Crash and Baroness Network Timeout. Fortunately the basic weapon, Task Manager, is quite good for killing crashed instances of the game. Occasionally you get a boss battle where the game crashes and won’t let you at Task Manager. The classic “take away your weapons” ploy. This is an FPS that’s not afraid to play by the book.
Anyway, after a few crashes The Gamer manages to create an online profile. He then enters his key into the third bit of software, whereupon the game promptly crashes again. He restarts three times, only for the game to crash every time he is transported to the Narnia-like world of GFWL.
After about half an hour of this, The Gamer sees it mentioned online that he can create an offline profile, which, after two more crashes, he manages to do. Thus he manages to actually play his game.
I hope this spoiler doesn’t ruin anyone’s enjoyment of the game.
How short is it?
I’m done. And it wasn’t a rush-the-fuck through the game.
Welcome to the world of multiplayer, where a good game can be extended for years. How is it?
Yah, the first Bioshock wasn’t much more than ten or twelve hours, either. I don’t mind that, though - a short, well-polished game is still worth the money to me.
Let me guess: snow day?
I couldn’t get through Bioshock.
Sure, it was a great game. But just a little too intense.
I can’t stand a game where there’s mutants weeping while other mutants jump out of the shadows to kill you. Mutants sobbing about what they’d lost before they attack. I played like 20% through Bioshock; I thought it was great but I just couldn’t stand the atmosphere.
Very neat concept, gorgeous art, but just too…emotional. I won’t be playing Bioshock 2, though I hope it does well.
Mine should be arriving today. I’ll post something about it should I find myself able to pull myself away from it.
Installed this yesterday through Steam, and started playing it last night. Haven’t gotten very far, but I’ve enjoyed what I’ve seen.
This morning, I found out that my computer rebooted overnight, and now my DVD drive is missing. Sure enough, Bioshock 2 uses SecuRom.
Son. Of. A. Bitch.
Cleaned it out, but my drive hasn’t returned.
Why the hell are they using SecuRom on the Steam build?
