BIOT & I

Hi all! I am now living in BIOT, full title of which is British Indian Ocean Territory. The one inhabited island is Diego Garcia. Why am I here? It’s a job and it’s for a year. Obviously, though, there is internet access so I’m not completely cut off of the world. The advantage is…well, it’s interesting so far, though I’ve only been here since Monday evening local time (local time is same as in Bangladesh).

Cheers!

WOW! Is that surrounded by water or what?

I was going to try to impress you with my flight over the Indian Ocean.

(Went from Mauritius to Perth, both favorites of mine, one very old - home of the Dodo, Perth very new and shiny.)

Are you in some country’s navy? Is that in a shipping lane at all?

It seems too great a trip to take in a small plane, as they can’t have a long runway.

Did you leave from Bangladesh? I’ve always wanted to go there.

Keep clear of the coconut crabs, we got chased off the beach by one.
We were very drunk at the time but all the same it did seem annoyed at us when we poked it with a sweeping brush handle enough to crunch the end of it and scuttle after us!

Not even close to what. All 60+ square KM are surrounded by the Indian Ocean. (For those who wish to know the local time here, please check http://www.bsdi.com/date.)

I’m retired US Navy. However, at the moment I’m now a civilian contractor working for a company on the Island.

I’m not about to touch the coconut crabs! In addition to the fine, there’s a jail term for that stunt. Speaking of fines: The BIOT Police also levy a 17 Pound 50 Pence fine for each mile over the speed limit (up to a maximum fine of 500 Pounds). And you get a ticket for going even one mile over the limit.

But the place really is paradise. Beautiful and hot as heck.

Watch out for typhoons in the summer. If you’re south of Bangladesh, you’re in a firing zone for them.

Oh, yeah. [calling from behind camera] WATCH OUT FOR SNAKES!
