Last night I dreamed I had found a raptor called a Frittillary Cascade. In my dream it was a smallish hawk, like a red-shouldered, with a crest or frill at the front of its head. I know that frittillary is a type of butterfly but there is no such species, bird or otherwise, called a frittillary cascade.I am picturing the bird so perfectly in my head that I am wondering if my subconscious is remembering an actual bird species as I described. But I can’t recall any raptor species with a crest placed at the front of the head, is there one?
Ooh, thanks! My dream bird had a fuller crest but that looks a lot like it. My subconscious also decided this bird was found in Virginia. My subconscious is as bad with geography as my conscious brain. I was hoping one of us was smarter.
Could it be a Philippine Eagle? It’s not small, but it shares the “f” sound with “Frittillary”. Or maybe a Secretary Bird… nope, not small either, nor the Caracara. I think kayaker got it.
More like a Harpy Eagle?
Boy, that brings back memories. My first wife was a harpy. </shudder>
I think it looks most like the one kayaker posted but with a fuller crest. I always love looking at birds so feel free to post anymore you may find that fit the description. Love the Secretary bird, but the crest doesn’t match.
I think this dream was brought on by having a red-shouldered hawk come in at my work last night and then going home and watching the fist disc of the Brit TV series Primeval which had a cut little flying dinosaur with a funny crest. I think my subconscious dug up Fritillary because I had seen that name for a native butterfly and I thought it was a cool name and I saw one a few days ago. The name sounds so Butterfly-ish. Why my subconscious decided to apply it to a bird, I have no idea.
One of my favorite crested raptors is the Ornate Hawk-Eagle. There is also the African Long-crested Eagle.
Wow. Beautiful! I happened to be kayaking last night (there was a full moon and clear skies) and got to watch an Osprey as the sun was setting.
My favorite “crested” bird (non-raptor division) is the Hawkhead Parrot.
That first one is the closest yet. I don’t know if my brain made up the bird or pulled one out of my memory. I used to look at lots of bird books and nature magazines and I can see how a bird like that would make an impression.
Ha! That looks like it’s preparing for some sort of Eastern European festival of traditional dancing or something.
Not a raptor, but if any bird was to go by the name of Fritillary Cascade, it would have to be the Royal Flycatcher. The crest is only rarely displayed.
