birdgirl is now nyctea scandiaca...

I have changed my name…

Nyctea scandiaca is the snowy owl, my favorite owl at the moment. Obviously since I was “birdgirl,” I was a bird connoisseur. But that was kind of a boring name, so I decided to change it!

By the way, this was inspired by the “Change my username?” thread…

How do you pronounce “Nyctea”? Nice Tea?

I have no idea how to pronounce it. But thanks for asking anyways…!

Don’t worry, I’ve already recorded it on the Offical Record of Name Changes thread for you.

No idea how to pronounce your new name, nyctea scandiaca. It could be rendered phonetically as Nik-Tee Scan-Dee-Ak-Ah. But then that’s just my uninformed opinion.

Thanks, Flamsterette_X!!!

Any bird people out there who know how to pronounce the scientific name of the snowy owl???

Did you get an administrator to change your name, or did you just sign up with a new account? I still see birdgirl as an active member.

If you just signed up with a new (second) account, you should let the administrators know as soon as is humanly possible, as that’s not permitted here.

(Of course, maybe I’m just confused …)

There’s also a cowgirl, dragongirl, irishgirl, etc. so I can understand you wanting to distinguish yourself.

But Dantheman is right, if you simply created a new username and stopped using the old one, that’s a violation of the board rules. E-mail TubaDiva (tubadiva@aol.com) pronto to get this cleared up before you get in real trouble.

OH SHIT I screwed up! I wasn’t aware of any of this, but I e-mailed tubadiva and I hope to get it cleared up ASAP. Thanks for the warning, and sorry for being such a dumb-ass!

DUH!

I hate to break this to you, but in the latest Supplement to the AOU checklist (in the July issue of the Auk), the official scientific name of the Snowy Owl has been changed to Bubo scandiacus.

Anyway, Bubo is easier to pronounce than Nyctea.

I’m one poster whose gladder than most.

You don’t know how many times I’ve seen a birdgirl post and wondered “When the hell did I post that?”

New York City Tea is a thousand times better than Bubo.

Fairly sure from my days in Latin that Nyctea is Nick-tea-a.
Scandiaca would be Scan-de-a-cia(maybe) lemme see if I can find it)

Ahhhh, but “bubo” would remind me of “buboes”, the telltale signs of the black death!

Good thing you were still just ‘birdgirl’ when you and TTO decided to have a D&B Dopefest.
