Birdsong and Diorama

Not the name of the new sitcom with Jenna Elfman and Thomas Gibson lookalikes, but a question about mp3 players and second grade projects.

Bricker Jr.'s book “report” this month is a diorama project, and he’s constructed an elaborate minature forest to showcase his clay wood thrush. He’s read a book about migratory birds and is captivated by the saga and sound of the wood thrush.

So he asks me if there’s a way to add sound to his project, pointing out that he Goggled “wood thrush” and found a page where you can play a wood thrush’s call. Obviously, he realizes that he can’t have the laptop at school under the diorama, but it got me thinking about maybe rigging up a cheap mp3 player to just play that one mp3 sound. But a cheap mp3 player is a tiny mp3 player. SO I’m just casting around for ideas: can anyone think of an easy way to build a bigger “Play Me” button that could trigger an mp3 player? Or another way of getting the spell of the wood thrush’s song into his diorama?

Could the player be loaded with the single mp3, and put on continuous loop? No need for a larger button then.

Or, another possibly lame idea:

Get one of those greeting cards where you can record your own message. Record the thrush on that, and mask the card’s artwork. Then people could open the card to hear the song.

How about a cheap keychain recorder? Inexpensive and no big deal if it’s lost or stolen.

I think we have a winner.

I could even remove the player from the card and help him mount it on the diorama somewhere, complete with a little flap to start/stop the recording.

By jingo, you’ve done it. This is perfect.

Yay!
