Birth Defect! Need Help!

My little sister (age 18) is having a baby. Everything has been going okay with the pregnancy until now. On her last ultra sound the doctor notice that the baby’s intestines are growing outside of the baby’s body. This is known as “gastroschisis.” My sister is still in shock along witht he rest of the family. Her worst fear has happened something is wrong with the baby and she still has 4 to 5 months to go till full term. As of right now things are okay, but like I said its still early. My question to you all is has anyone ever experienced this with their children or know of someone who has? So far from all that I have gathered it happens with young mothers, nothing can prevent it, and can be fixed with surgery when the baby is born. Does anyone know what kind of things she is to expect after the baby is born and has the surgery? I know of the written clinical possible after effects, but it would be good to know of some possible effects from someone who has delt with this before. Thanks any info would be much appriciated.

Sorry to hear about the health problems of the baby.
You might want to check out some on-line support groups.

There is one here

and here

Best wishes for you and your family.

I re-checked that last link…it’s not really a support group, but a general discussion of GI problems. The first one is probably your best bet. You could also search the newsgroups

Would she be a candidate for in utero surgery?

It would seem if they can fix diaphragmatic hernias, then maybe your sister and her baby might be candidates.
