I’m a life long Kansan, I love my state. But by God I’m ashamed of the Republican loons that hold office here. The following two links are to articles in the Topeka Capital-Journal. The first appeared in this morning’s paper, the second is on line and will probably be in hard copy tomorrow. It appears that the State Objections Board wants more documentation to prove that the President is truly an American citizen.
I’m disgusted at the actions of the important Republican officials involved, and can’t wait to see how they are going to back pedal now that the idiot who started all this is surprised at the negative reaction he is getting.
Birthers, IMNSHO, are racists, pure and simple. Since it’s not politically correct to object to the color of the President’s skin, they have to invent some other thing to bitch about.
Believe it or not I’m actually registered as a Republican. But this is the last straw, and I’m finally going to get off of my ass and change parties. Maybe it doesn’t matter, as I’ve never voted a party line. But I won’t be part of a group that allows shenanigans like those in the articles above.
Nothing surprises me anymore. The vitriol, hate and racism from the extremes of the Republican and Tea Parties is a sad commentary on a once robust and honorably conservative party. Sadder yet is the complacency of the Republican moderates, and their willingness to abdicate to the lunatic fringe. Jim Crow laws, birther bullshit, and a determined effort to return the country to failed policies while attempting to meld government and religion together, should make every American with a brain stand up and say STOP.
The sheer stupidity of it amazes me. As the second article points out, successfully removing Obama’s name from the ballot might drive down far right turnout, having the unintended consequence of making all the state races so jacked-up by redistricting that much closer. It’s not like Kansas is in play for the Presidency in any conceivable reality. It boggles the mind.
Baker, you’re in the same boat as my dad. Lifelong Kansan, military contractor, retired Army officer, and retired high school history teacher with specialties in government and American and Constitutional history, he told me a while ago: “I’m a registered Republican. I just haven’t been able to vote that way in quite a while.”
What we have are the comments to the articles, that you can read when you are done with the article. They really make me appreciate the SDMB and it’s overall literacy. We use full sentences!
Well, Lawrence is not all that far. But I can bring brownies, I am a baker by profession.
