Unlurking again to say I hereby pit the state of Kansas because I live here and frankly it’s embarrassing. It looks like Brownback and Pat Roberts might win, along with Huelskamp, and that means something - it means the people in here really are idiots. He ran the state’s financial status right down the toilet and yet these ignorant gits are fully prepared to vote him right back in to finish the job of driving it into the ground and depriving women of every civil right they can, because hey, government wastefulness is always more important than serving its people ethically and morally.
The state got off to a decent start in the early days - deciding to be a free state during the battle over slavery, but it was all downhill from there. My experience here shows me that at that point they decided they weren’t interested in progress, nay, ignorant and proud of it was the desired outcome, and my God does it show. Women are still second-class barely human beings who should be tied to the kitchen and remain barefoot and pregnant. And sadly, a lot of women would agree, because something better doesn’t occur to them.
I had experienced this deeply entrenched gender bigotry while I, a woman, was the IT manager for my local hospital, and it’s something I will never do again - I got burned too badly. And it’s something I’m going with my current job - because I do what the locals consider a man’s job I face insanity every day. No one believes in critical thinking. No one even considers thinking as such, but I’m not at all sure they’re capable of it anyway, the Board Kansans notwithstanding.
I am embarrassed and deeply ashamed of the people of this state, and now live for nothing more than leaving it and not looking back. It’s been my home all my life, but it hasn’t felt like it for a long time.
This is a rant. Take it with a grain of salt.
Or maybe not. It’s a crap state and shows no signs of changing.
It’s much more than just the political aspect. It’s the cultural ignorance that allows it to happen that leads to keeping Kansas behind the rest of the US by perhaps 150 years or so. We’re in the Age of Information. Any info is available at your fingertips with an internet connection. Computers aren’t just solitaire machines, for God’s sake!
The funniest part of Democrats losing is how they lash out at everyone for not voting for them. IOZ said it best:
Right now the Daily Kos comment section is a gold mine of this sort of mentality. Maybe Thomas Frank should pen a sequel to What’s the Matter with Kansas?
Of course, what with Obama having had virtually no chance to nudge the Supreme Court to the left–having only gotten to replace two ELDERLY liberals with two other, somewhat less mature liberals–we see now how handsomely the Repubs have benefited from Citizens United.
For all the talk of rich Hollywood liberals, the kind of rich they are is no competition at all for the kind of rich the Koch brothers are.
It’s easier than ever to win in this country if you have most of the money.
Well I’m also from Kansas and I dont see it as bad as you. My first question to you though is what state should we compare Kansas to?
I personally think its a pretty good place to live and my city, Overland Park, has been voted the top 10 communities in the country. Our school systems, Blue Valley, Shawnee Mission, and Desoto, are some of the best. We have a top community college in Johnson County Community College. We have a thriving art scene. We have beautiful (and free) public parks like Deanna Rose and the Overland Park arboretum. If I want to go mountain biking, camping, fishing - any of those things they arent bumper to bumper crowded. We have a low unemployment rate, low crime rate, and best of all - its all affordable. One can buy a home here for less than $100k.
I’m sorry for your experience as a computer tech with sexism. I dont understand why you didnt just move when their are so many tech firms in the area hiring.
Now as the the election, really your complaints about the recent election are just sour grapes for Democrats not winning.
Quite frankly, why is it that when your man/woman loses democrats always say the other side are “idiots”? Why cannot you just admit that your candidates were a poor choice or ran a bad campaign?
Take the governors race for example. Quite frankly I DID want Brownback out. But I felt that Lawrence liberal Paul Davis, whom I met last June, was too far to the left. The Kansas Democratic party had better people but they chose Davis. Well your funeral. I also wanted Pat Roberts out but Orman wasnt a good choice. Why? He wasnt honest and admit he was a sleeper Democrat running as an independent plus his views on immigration made no sense.
BTW, I have inside information on the Kansas Democrats and quite frankly, they are a mess. Way too many top candidates are pushed aside because of the pro-Union side of the party.
So please tell me just where the best place is to move?
Congratulations, Mr. ThanThou. However, you have an advantage in that category: most people voting for democrats (with the exception of a handful of districts like Tom Harkin’s) don’t actually have the problem of being idiots for supporting democrats.
Guys, quit letting the conservatives define what this thread is about. Don’t let marshmallow’s set the direction. Go at his underlying assumption.
And that assumption is that the only reason anyone can say that voters are stupid is because they voted for the wrong party. That’s not in the OP. What’s in the OP are actual reasons why the current guy, irrespective of his party, was a bad choice.
This isn’t about the strawman that Democrats only like democracy when they win. If you let it turn into that, then I think you’re the idiots.
I dunno, the OP didn’t really give much in terms of actual reasons, beyond the hyperbolic “running the economy into the ground” and “depriving women of every civil right they have”, neither of which are all that specific or supported by her post. Which is fine…it’s a rant, not an argument, but at the same time, it’s not like the original post is some sort of carefully constructed logical proof that people are hijacking the thread against.
An old bit of electoral doggerel:
*
The election is over, the results now are known.
The will of the people is quite clearly shown.
So let’s get together, let bitterness pass,
I’ll hug your elephant, and you kiss my ass.*
