At the store where I work we listen to the oldies. All day long. And the day sure can feel long when you have to listen to the oldies. Every single day I hear the same songs, some of them are sappy, and some of them are catchy, and some of them are weird, but none intrigue me quite as much as this:
Okay, apparently nobody knows what this song is about.
So here’s my other question: Why do oldies radio stations play the same music every day? You would think they had virtually unlimited material to work with, yet day in, day out, I am forced to hear ‘Baby Love’. Why?
There’s this chick, and she walks around all anticipating-like, 'cept nobody’s coming, see? Some people think she’s waiting for a guy who’s in prison, some people think he was a sailor lost at sea. Either way, she’s still waiting.
Then she croaks, and we get the fall/death imagery of the previously green turning rust colored. She’s buried in the cemetary by the church, and then the schmuck shows up, and misses her, but he’s too late.
It’s Dirty Vegas’ “Days Go By”, except the roles are reversed and she doesn’t dance so much.
Still, I dunno. I guess from the way he talks about her in the song, especially “…Waiting for her master…”, and “…Waiting for someone to take her home …” made me think that she was not in fact his wife. The way they talk about her, she sounds like a dog or a horse or something. Isn’t it kind of weird to refer to someone’s husband as their ‘master’?
