KFC has been in Aus much longer than McD or Burger King. They had to work a lot harder at fitting in.
Yes, we call those “rolls”.
Yeah, but in the States, a Zinger is a kind of snack cake.
The point being that insisting on it being called a “sandwich” is a kind of parochial attitude which assumes that U.S. usage is somehow more correct.
No different from insisting that soccer be called “football”, if you stop and think about it.
I find that obnoxious, too. Of course, we call soccer “soccer” anyway.
To my American ears, hearing somebody call a hamburger a “sandwich” just sounds wrong. And yet I’ve heard that very thing, in American commercials for American burger joints. Each time, it was in the form of a “customer testimonial” in which the “customer” was calling their burger a “great sandwich”. Okay, fine, a hamburger may technically meet the definition of a “sandwich”, but nobody calls a hamburger a fucking “sandwich”! Who writes this stuff?
It’s a hamburg steak sandwich.
I’m not at all surprised if there are regions where people typically call them sandwiches, as the item was originally referred to as a type of sandwich.
A not at all uncommon conversation at my local McDonald’s–
Me: I’d like a Big Mac, please.
Employee: Did you want the combo, or just the sandwich?
Me: Just the sandwich.
Perfectly ordinary usage. Happens every day.
Fair enough. I guess I’ve never encountered that situation, due to the way I place my orders in restaurants. I clearly state precisely what I want and how I want it, leaving the person behind the register no reason to ask me any questions. I preempt the questions I know they’ll ask:
Me: I’ll have a #5 combo, medium size, curly fries, for here.
Them: That’ll be $8.63
Swipe card, get out of the line.
John Pinette would have loved me.
They look disgusting but can’t say until I have tried it. It’s odd, though not as odd as the KFC chicken hot dog bun. The hot dog was wrapped in a bun made of CHICKEN!!
What part of a chicken is the [DEL]“nugget”[/DEL] bun?
I’d eated it!
CMC fnord!
How bout a Bacon cheese and hashbrown sandwich where the bread is replaced by pieces of chicken?
