So, I’ve been playing through Black Flag, and I just did a whale hunting thing and… well, let’s just say that I don’t want to do it again.
Looking through the lists, it looks like the only thing I’ll miss out on, apart from clothes, is an extra pistol. Is the game going to force it on me at any point? Will I miss out on anything else.
Really didn’t like it.
It’s an efficient way to farm cash and materials, but you don’t need to hunt whales in order to finish the game, no.

Yeah, I remember it (whaling specifically, but hunting in general) being disturbingly gruesome, even though I just slaughtered hundreds/thousands of people with out a care. I think the only thing I didn’t complete in the game was finding the white whale.
Some of the crafting requires whale & shark bone & skins. I don’t recall if you can buy those anywhere, or can only get them from hunting. Just remember that the seas were teeming with whales back in the golden age of piracy.
And there’s a reason why now, they’re not.
Well, yes, and it’s a computer game, so I aware I’m not actually killing whales. That doesn’t make me want to cull the herd.
I’ve been on with most of the hunting so far, I’ve killed some monkeys and ocelots and things. But the whale /shark hunting in the game is another level - the whales especially you see breaching in the sea beside your ship before you’re invited to get into a boat and hurl harpoons at it.
Glad I’m not required to do it, might get back to the piracy this evening.
As long as you don’t miss the irony that you’re slaughtering hundreds or thousands of sailors whose only crime was to sail with a cargo you found desirable.
