Black jeans -- yea or nay?

Ok, here’s a question: how old are you? I think black jeans (note, in the article above they’re talking about a special black wash and not pure black jeans) can be pulled off if you’re youngish and already fashionable. If you’re over thirty-five and you’re talking about just getting a pair of black Levi’s, sure, you can wear them but you’ll look dated. That won’t matter to some women, to other women, it’ll matter a lot.

My black-Levi’s-wearing husband is 39. Too old? He’s still got a pretty nice ass, y’know.

Sorry; I accidentally cited the wrong article. Here is the right one, and it does refer to generic black jeans.

I think the relevant quote is this one:

When I think of black jeans, I think of old, faded black Levi’s worn with the afore-mentioned mullet and Iron Maiden t-shit. (and there aren’t a ton of women who find that look particularly attractive. I’m well aware there are some and probaby a good percentage frequent this message board, just like there are probably women on this message board who find over-sized Yu-Gi-Oh T-shirts attractive, but it’s not a mainstream look)

If you were wearing new black jeans that fit well with a modern cut, that’s possibly attractive. That’s what I meant with the whole “fashionable” comment above. But, if you’re not one hundred percent confident in your fashion sense and you want to avoid looking dated, avoid black jeans. (and, of course, this is one woman’s opinion, and there will be loads of people coming by to say they just love Yu-Gi-Oh T-shirts and black jeans…)

Well, to me, black jeans on men equate to “Monsters of Rock Tour Roady”.

So, if you’re OK with that, or you are, in fact, currently working a Monsters of Rock Tour, I say go for it.

If you’re an investment banker, black jeans may not be the best choice.

YMMV.

FWIW - having your bootie look fabulous can lessen many fashion sins.

All this talk about black jeans being dated is astonishing news to me. They’re everywhere. Any place you can buy blue jeans, there are at least as many black ones. Like I said, they’re hardly an aberration – not by a long shot.

Mine are Wranglers, if that makes any difference – maybe it’s a cowboy thing. I don’t claim to be a cowboy, but I do frequent a country/western bar so maybe it’s more acceptable in those circles. More to the point, Wranglers are the only jeans that fit the way I like. I am sick to death of the proliferation of “baggy,” "loose fit, " “wide leg,” etc. It’s quite difficult to find jeans that fit properly, even among the major brands. I’m 34 years old; I do not want to dress like a 15-year-old skater punk. Wranglers are just plain, traditional, regular ol’ jeans. The concept that black could be “wrong,” in and of itself, for any article of clothing, is just alien to me.

Perhaps, but are those black jeans for males or for females? As some posters have suggested, that could make a difference.

And to answer Duderdude2’s question, I’m male. In fact, I’m a dude.

Personally, I can’t stand black jeans because they remind me of my old “period jeans” that only got worn the week I was feeling the grossest. I also just get the willies when people look top heavy and black jeans make that an easy mistake to make.

On guys, I can only picture black jeans looking nice if you are going for a simple working/ lightly punk rock look with a white tee shirt and maybe a metal necklace or something. Or maybe a tightish pair if you are doing the hipster thing. But I think they’d look a bit dated on an older person or paired with anything colorful or dressy.

I’ve got about three pairs of black jeans and no one has yelled at me yet (indeed, I got compliments on one of them). I think the most important thing would be what you’re wearing them with and how good you feel in them. I’ve personally found that the outfits I feel most attractive in tend to be the same ones others notice and comment on. As with so much else, half the battle is confidence.

The other half is not totally fumbling up with colors or styles. But, believe it or not, most people are able to do that for themselves… or at the very worst consult someone who can.

(BTW I purchased my black jeans at Express Mens. Not exactly a bastion of cowboyhood.)

Uh. I’m wearing black jeans (and knit cotton sweater) right now and while I’m not fashionable, I’m not the mullet sporting redneck that some people in this thread seem to think I am based on the kind of ***pants ***I wear. I don’t even own a single t-shirt with any sort of design on it and I’m just as happy in regular blue jeans or khakis.

These types of threads always make me twitch.

Nay.

Look on the bright side, at least they don’t have every team logo from a particular league patched onto them.

Use whatever you like in your wardrobe. If you have one friend that raves about how good the pants look on you, and another that has some fashion objection to black jeans in general (not specifically how they look on you), then buy the jeans.

I wear what’s comfortable, and what I think looks good. I value my wife’s opinion, but I really couldn’t care less what everyone else things. I’m 46, by the way.

And concerning black jeans in general, I tend to wear them when I want something dressier than blue jeans, but not as formal as a suit or a pair of wool dress slacks.

I just bought 2 pairs of black jeans and 2 pairs of khaki colored jeans. Because I like them. I don’t give a flying fig about fashion. I dress for me.

Yeah, I’m a rebel! Or a crabby old lady. Either way.

Female, one pair of black jeans.

I don’t really give a damn what anyone else wears as long as it’s not tapered. Tapered jeans look good on almost no one.

Agree about the tapered thing. My wardrobe is not exactly cutting edge (I am 50, the 70’s-80’s are well over along with my fashion awareness) but I am glad that tapered faded away.
Husband has never worn black jeans.
I have a couple pairs of Gap black jeans but they have been sitting, unworn, in a drawer all winter. Too tapered. The waists are high. They do look and feel dated.
I have been wearing newish Eddie Bauer black khaki-type pants when I want to wear black pants; one thing I have noticed is the waists are cut lower. Even women my age are slowly beginning to revisit the 70’s with the lower-waist thing. It’s subtle but it’s definitely happening. For me it’s much more comfortable and flattering–but I won’t be wearing any belly shirts.
I even have a pair of low-waisted Anthropologie black velvety bellbottom pants and I’ve wore them here and there, but spared anyone the sight of my midriff.

I like black jeans on men. In fact, a well cut pair of black jeans, a good belt, a black t-shirt and some solid boots would be my all-time hottest outfit to see my husband in

Since when are jeans subject to fashion?
I thought they were supposed to be timeless?
Anyways I love wearing my black jeans.
If that makes me a fashion-victim… meh… couldn’t care less.

Are you familiar with the brand Lucky? They make extra long jeans for guys and gals. If you are a girl, Delia’s now makes 36 inch inseams, at reasonable prices.
For the OP: Black jeans are indeed coming back into style. We sell black and slate-colored sevens at the boutique I work at. But I do want to enforce taht you should wear whatever makes you feel good. . . .

damn, a girl with a 36" inseam? i’m a 6’-2" guy and my inseam is only 32". 36"… that’s awesome…

anyway, when i first read the post, i was like, who cares? i don’t have any black jeans, but i have some dark indigo ones that i wear occasionally.

but then i saw our computer tech dude come in last night with some black jeans, and i changed my mind.

say no to black jeans.

I’m a 5’9 female and my inseam is 34".

I’m 25 and I have a sexy hip hugging pair of black jeans. I always get compliments when I wear them instead of normal blue jeans.
