Oh and AE.com has tall sizes aswell. (:
BWAHAHAHA! What those bring to mind is the phrase “Wake me up before you go-go.” If they look that bad on a model, I shudder to think what they must look like on an actual person.
The reason “they’re all in stores now” (though I’ve yet to see a pair) is because PEOPLE ARE STUPID AND WILL BUY ANYTHING! They sell velour tube tops in stores now, but that doesn’t mean they look good, are “in style”, or you should buy one.
These places need to start making shorter jeans as well, as I have the opposite problem. I’m about 5-3", and I’m not sure what my inseam is, but even the “short” jeans at Old Navy and Gap are still about an inch too long. What can I say? I’m kinda stumpy. Cute, but stumpy.
This is the first I’ve heard that black jeans are somehow “bad.”
People who pay attention to what’s “hot” in the world of clothing have 2 advantages that many people don’t have:
-
The money to rush out and buy something the second the TV declares it to be “in”
-
A body that will fit the clothes.
If you don’t have $80 to spend on whatever the Gap is hawking or you happen to be a plus size, forget it. You don’t exist, at least in the minds of those who decide what people should wear. You either take what you can afford, and/or what fits.
So the hell with what everyone thinks. If someone has a problem with the color jeans I’m wearing, they are free to avert their eyes. It’s not like we were in any danger of hanging out to begin with.
Well said Abbie Carmichael.
But this thread was interesting to me, especially when it dawned on me, before I ever saw the thread, that my old black jeans had been sitting in the drawer unworn all winter–been wearing those black khakis instead, they feel better on me.
I will always look for comfort first. Been that way since I was a kid.
However, even though my present participation in fashion is merely a sort of trickle-down effect, I enjoy observing the ebbs and flows and everything-old-is-new-again of fashion. (The return of the poncho! What a crackup!)
I’m wearin’ em right now.
Ya know, that’s fine and all but the OP specifically asked for opinions on black jeans and they were given. If you don’t wanna opinions that contradict yours, don’t read the thread.
There are more and more stores marketing to plus sized everyday with very stylish clothing (been in Lane Bryant lately?) so that’s a tired excuse. Plus, in this day and age, you can great fashion at places like Target (my main source for clothing, I rarely pay more than $25 for a piece) and Old Navy.
Things go in and out of style. You don’t have to pay attention to fashion trends, but they don’t exist in a vaccuum. I’m 38 and graduated high school in 1985. Loved high waisted jeans with tapers and remember how absolutely horrible those hip-hugger bell-bottom hippy jeans looked. Twenty years later and tapered jeans just look wrong to me. The fashion zeitgeist has shifted.
I think the problem I have with black jeans (I’m male by the way) is that it seems like it’s an attempt to dress up more than normal blue jeans but without the effort of actually wearing dress pants. I guess they are coming back in style though. It was probably inevitable, since jeans seem to be getting darker and darker as it is. In any case, I’m much happier with black jeans coming back than white. So wear the black if you like them, but please, please don’t wear white even if you do. No, I’m just kidding. You wear what you want. But seriously reconsider the white if that’s your thing
OK, that last post was kinda testy. (ok, it wasn’t testy by Pit standards but it was testy by mine) I get a little snappish because the whole anti-fashion elitism is kinda annoying. I enjoy following fashion trends. It’s a hobby just like video games or anime or or Showgirls or mideval Celtic poetry or the study of b-mesons are hobbies of others.
The OP asked for fashion opinions. If someone had asked about which video games were cool and everyone started jumping in about how Pong was good enough for them and one can’t be expected to be able to buy new games every year and screw you if Colecovision isn’t good enough, that might be kinda annoying too.
Blue jeans have been mentioned in pop culture many times. Not so for black jeans.
What if I were Romeo in black jeans, what I was Heathcliff, it’s no myth, maybe she’s just looking for someone to dance with… Michael Penn-No Myth
Just bought a new pair of black jeans yesterday…
Most of the cute stuff at Lane Bryant is either too expensive or way too low cut, IMHO. I have a great rack, but I wanna keep that to myself at a job interview, ya know?
Target only goes to a size 22. I’ll be a 22 by the fall, probably, but in the meantime they’re useless. They do have some cute stuff, though, or they did the last time I was in there. Way better than Wal-Mart, anyway (don’t get me started on them).
I didn’t know that about Old Navy, though. Next time I’m at the mall I’ll take a deep breath and go in there and check it out.
PS: This is why I’m learning to sew.
Saying yes or no to all black jeans isn’t possible. It depends on the pair, just like any other jeans or pants. When I first think of black jeans I do tend to think of the ones from the 80’s, but when I consider it more I have seen them around recently and they look more like black pants with jean styling, if that makes sense. I would say the cut is more important than the color. Just make sure they don’t fade in the wash, but black faded clothes look bad in general, IMO.
36" inseam is not that unusual for a guy, I can find them in lots of stores. I am even having more luck finding them in women’s sizes (I need a 34-36" inseam). I actually ordered a pair of jeans from Gap that came in extra-long recently and for the first time in my life, I had jeans that were too long. I was stunned, I didn’t know what to do with them! They were like the holy grail of jeans for tall women. When I got them I just held them for a while. I did end up having them altered and had a good 3" taken off but man it really pained me to make jeans shorter.
Old Navy has a plus-size dept. now, though I’m not sure what size they go up to, I’m pretty sure it’s larger than 22. I think it’s 26, but I can’t be sure.
On the web site, I see up to size 20 in the main Women’s section and 26 in the Plus sizes. It’s worth trying even if you don’t think you’re a 20 yet. Old Navy tends to inflate sizes a lot, I wear a size two sizes smaller there.
Abby Carmichael, congrats on the weightloss. My best friend is 5’2" and, over the last year, went from over 200 to a svelte 160. She looks great and is having a great time finding new, less “flowy” clothing. (and, truthfully, was the one to tell me I couldn’t wear my beloved Old Navy loose-fit jeans anymore and had to update)
(I can’t believe I’ve made soemthing like seven posts in a thread about black jeans. I’m really not that worked up about 'em…)
I’m wearing black jeans right now. I think they look pretty good with my dark green shirt, black hiking boots and black leather jacket…
Black jeans don’t seem like a bad thing. Now, black jeans and white tennis shoes (or white hi-top sneakers) are a sure sign of someone looking for a Richard Marx concert to go to, but how often have you seen that look since 1988?
Yeah, but what do you know? You wear kilts, too.
I’m with audiobottle - black jeans just look like you wanted to dress up a little but didn’t want to take the time to do it properly (well, that and the unfortunate '80s connotation). If you’re going for a dress/work casual sort of thing, it’s probably better for you just to buy black pants.
'Course, Mr. Snicks has very little to do with jeans of any flavor. He’s got a coupla pairs for working around the yard and such, but other than that, he doesn’t care for them. He’s always in dress casual - he prefers it. And he looks good, too. So that’s where I’m coming from.

Jealous?
Kilt-wearin’ man, how YOU doin?
