Black Sails home video release

I was in a Best Buy yesterday and I saw they had the DVD and BluRay for Black Sails on sale. I’ve been waiting for this to be released so I checked it out. I felt the price was a little high so I decided to look around and see if any other stores had it for less.

But when I checked Target and Walmart, neither had it. Then I went home and checked Amazon. And Amazon said Black Sails was only available for pre-order because it wasn’t being released until January 6.

There have been a couple of occasions when I’ve seen a store put a video out a day or two before its official release date. But three weeks seems pretty extreme.

The only thing I can see is the video company must have shipped the videos early and told stores to hold them until the official release date. Which raises other questions. Why would Best Buy publicly defy this? Why would other stores like Target and Walmart agree to use storage space for hold videos for three weeks? If the videos have been made and distributed why is the company delaying their release (especially when sales will presumably drop after the holidays)?

Are you sure what you saw wasn’t a preorder? Yes, it would be silly to have it in a full size box, but they do more silly things before breakfast now than most people used to do all day.

This is what they do all the time with all sorts of movies and games. They have to do that if they want it going on sale in every store in the whole country on the same day.

If they did, it was probably just a mistake. Some stock boy didn’t notice the big DO NOT OPEN UNTIL [whenever] written on it.

So they have it for sale on the first day. Otherwise, if they break street date, the publisher might attempt to “fine” them (which they can always just ignore, but then they’ll start not sending them the product until after release date, which they don’t want)
