We went to the beach today. Wow, crowded! Had to park right next to people. Wasn’t too bad though, still had some walking around space. The people on our left were a nice young black family with the cutest toddler. But booming out from their speakers was the filthiest rap song I’ve heard in a really long time, complete with multiple N bombs throughout, and I’m talkin not 2 or 3’ but in almost every line! It was loud enough to hear it clearly 5 cars down on both sides. They had several cars on the other side of them that I think we’re family or friends. But here we are, 2 of the whitest people possible, lounging in our chairs, trying not to notice the very word that is supposed to be so offensive to them, and cringing every time kids walked by, which was constant. It was so inappropriate in a public, mixed race family setting like that. We said nothing of course, but what on earth were they thinking? So uncomfortable. Why were they ok with doing that? I just don’t get it.
You should have engaged them.
“Hey, that’s some really catchy music you’re listening to! I always like to sing along to the radio. Could you teach me the words the the song that guy is singing?”
To be completely honest: had I been in your situation, I would have had less of an issue with the song lyrics than with them blasting music in a public space. When did it become acceptable to listen to your choice of music on speakers so loud that everyone around you has to hear it? Particularly at the beach, a place where people go to relax! That’s simply unacceptable.
The ‘n’ word? I quite like rap music myself, so I may have become desensitised. But the general rule for me is that if ‘they’ don’t mind it, why should I care?
You don’t know that black people can call each other nigga? Where have you been living?
The main issue is how loud the music is at a public place. You could have mentiond that.
If someone were to bump pop music at that level I would have been pissed.
Yup. Loud music is the offensive thing in this scenario. I mean, I dislike nearly all rap (and similar, whatever it is called), but if someone had been blasting out Mozart, that would also be annoying.
Especially if it was Leck mich im Arsch.
One should be prepared for such circumstances by carrying one’s own blaster loaded with Guy Lombardo playing Boo Hoo on a loop and cranked up to 11.
Damn black people should keep their hippity-hop to themselves.
Quick question: did everyone drive to the beach, then just sit by their cars?
I don’t mind the style, just the content. And I don’t really even care about content so much if listened to in the confines of home or auto, but not when other people’s easily influenced children are around.
This beach is one of the public beaches you can drive right up to the water on. We love it! you back your car in, open the back, and you don’t have to haul all your gear a half mile to the waterline.
I agree about the tranquility. And actually there is a noise ordinance there and locals will bitch at cars blasting too loud. But I guess on a holiday weekend they just let it go. Crowds bring money to the local economy so they probably don’t want to spoil the party atmosphere. We go there often, and this wasn’t a normal crowd. It’s usually sparsely populated, which is why we like it.
Yes, of course I know some do. But it doesn’t mean the time and place is always appropriate.
What are you worried they’ll be influenced to do?
Being children who soak up language like sponges they will probably be influenced to say “nigger”.
Very nice- not much you can do, I don’t think. Some people at the pool of the campground I was at this weekend were playing loud music and one of the songs featured the lyric “And you can fuckin’ suck my dick!” I gave them the death glare and said “really nice!” and kept going. WTF is wrong with people I have no idea.
Obviously, two things: Say “nigger” and think that rap [del]music[/del] is a legitimate art form, neither of which is acceptable.
This. I like music and I appreciate that you like music. But me and two hundred other people don’t need to hear your music (the general you) to the extent that normal conversation is impossible.
If your music is profane, then that just goes extra. If my daughter is around, that’s triple.
They should have a separate beach for those people. You know, loud music assholes. Surely the coast could be divided into separate but equal parcels?
The music would be annoying to me, but it would make me CRAZY to have people parking their cars on the damn beach. Talk about disturbing the tranquility of the ocean.
Seems way trashier than just blasting some music with bad words.
This is both a wonderful example of analogy as applied to the right facts, and a logical fallacy to the wrong facts. We need to find out which facts apply to the argument at hand, and how those facts are the same/different than other facts.
Agreed; I wanna go to the beach, but I’m too lazy to walk across the sand. Now that’s real crass right there.
As far as driving on the beach goes: When I was growing up, a lot of my relatives went to a 4 wheel drive beach frequently. This seems like something very different, though. A big part of the appeal was to NOT be around people. You would have to have a 4wd vehicle, buy a pass, and then you would drive and set up wherever you wanted. No one would pull up next to you, unless they were friends/family. Naturally, in this case you would be free to blast your music, setup sports courts, etc. If you wanted to be around crowds then you would go to the “people beach” or the resort “city” with the boardwalk and amusements 5 miles away.
So, driving on a beach doesn’t seem weird to me at all. But driving on a crowded beach right next to people does.
There are beaches that would require walking several miles to access without a vehicle.
