Blizzard!

What is this… snow …of which you people speak?

Andyman and Hamadryad: Booo…hissss…
Southern Oakland County here–(just north of Detroit to those of you who are not familiar with Michigan geography)it looks like we got about 10 inches of snow.

I am “working at home” so I guess I had better go do it.

You know you’re reading too fast when you ask a question someone just posted the answer to… My apologies, Persephone.

[sub]Are you SURE you’re from Flint? :d&r:[/sub]

Darn it all, she was going to have dinner with me, and then she said she might be going to Chicago instead…

We were discussing earlier how neither of us had been to a Dopefest… maybe we could put something together in Flint over the holidays, assuming the weather is a little more hospitable.

This is realy kinda neat in a sick way… Here in North Dakota, we got none of the snow from this storm. None. Instead it’s about -20 degrees out. And that isn’t wind chill. -20 degrees ambient temperature. I have electric heat. I am praying to every God and Goddess in every Theology I can think of, that the power doesn’t go out. Otherwise I will have to put on ALL my clothes. And I own a lot of clothes.

will–if the electricity goes out, just jump in the car and head due south. It’s just as cold here, but I’ll get out the blankets and light the fireplace and we’ll keep warm.
I’ve even got these great portable heaters–you’re not allergic to cats, are you?

Hey Hey Hey
The DJ just said it’s warming up out there.
It’s clear up to -2
It was down to -8 at 6:30 this morn.No wind though.
Hamadryad
Better get out the long wooly undies.

Took my wife to work this morn. Her car wouldn’t start yesterday afternoon. Bucked snowdrifts the first 2 miles. The snowplow had everything cleared by the time I got home. Those guys did a great job.

strutter: How far south? My car is being a real pig right now. Starts fine, but I got a slow leaking tire and radator. Dunno how far south I could get befor I lost both. I am slightly allergic to cats, but own two myself. (I have built an immunity to them.) I am pretty sure my wife would want to come too tho. Is there room for three in those blankets?

(On second thought, she might not dig that scene Hmm… :frowning: )

Oh joy.

ToddlerNym and I are on the red-eye to Grand Rapids, MI tonight.

Maybe I’d better call the airline ahead?

It would be a good idea… GR had at 12-14 inches. They said on the news last night that airlines were backed up all over the state pretty bad, and you know how there’s a cascading effect when flights get cancelled…

I suppose I’d better quit complaining about the “cold” snap here in New Mexico, huh? Why, it’s 10:30 in the morning and not even in the forties yet!

I’ve got a ton of friends and a smidgeon of family in Chicago. I hope you all get through this one safe and warm - but you’re used to it, right? You have all those mittens and hats with the earflaps and big coats and galoshes or whatever?

I hope all of you who are traveling in this mess have safe trips. If you’re driving, remember not to be a hero - your family would rather see you safe the day after Christmas than have you risk life and limb to get there on time. Good luck to all of you!

I haven’t actually looked outside my window yet but it was really windly last night. The power went out every time I finished resetting my alarm clock. About nine times in four hours. You bet I did’nt get any sleep. I heard car screaches around 5:00 AM (bedtime).

Us people in Pittsburgh, you know we have real weather. Its not how cold it gets in Chicago or how hot it gets in Houston, its about how it rains here in the morning, snows in the afternoon, sunshine between 5:00 - 5:15 pm and then the famous soupy Pittsburgh fog rolls in around dinner time.

Damn… its another cold, cloudy, nasty day… just it was whole month of November.

South-central Nebraska. And you’re welcome any time. Bring the wife. I wasn’t going to spring the husband and three kids and husband on you until you got here.
 But it’ll be warm, I can promise you that. And I make a mean chicken tortilla soup.

mwhahahahhhaaaa

Here in the balmy Yukon, it’s only -10 or -15 C right now, and there’s maybe six or seven inches of snow. Just enough to run the skidoos.

Sorry.

Every once in a while it’s nice to gloat when someone is having colder and yuckier weather. We pretty much have five temperatures - warm, chilly, cold, damn cold, and gdd f*#@# cold. Bugger all in the way of snow, though, we’re classified as semi-arid.

Good luck chipping your vehicles out. And be glad you don’t have to worry about whether or not you plugged in your vehicle before the temperature dropped.

later . . .

That sounds heavenly struuter, but, um, just how many husbands do you have?

Hahahahaha! That was a good one, wasn’t it? Actually, just one husband. But he’s pretty nice, so I guess he deserves double billing.
That’s what I get for walking away mid-sentence.

Well, my husband just returned from rescuing our car. He says that the main roads are clear, and according to the many folks up & down our street out shoveling, the expressways are fine, too.

We’ve got weird snow-plowing rules in this city. The mayor has to order plowing. He generally has the main roads cleared–and that’s it. Those of us who live on side streets are graced with the occasional sanding at the stop signs, and if he’s feeling particularly generous, the mayor will even have the roads salted. But only if he’s either a) in a really, really good mood, or b) the City Council has him hog-tied & threatens to give him a swirly in an unflushed toilet if he doesn’t send out the trucks.

Sigh. My husband says he’s going to work tonight. I think the short walk home in the blizzard last night froze some of his neurons.

[hijack]What exactly is it with [Flint mayor] Woodrow Stanley anyway? Have you been keeping up with on-going debacle with TV 5 news? Does he have some sort of persecution complex or something? (And is it deserved?)

On a completely unrelated hijack, there’s something just wrong with buying a christmas tree while wearing gym shorts and a t-shirt in 80 degree weather like I did yesterday, isn’t there?

:::sticking fingers in ears:::
LALALALA I can’t hear you SanibelMan LALALALA…

Anyway, yes, mrblue, our dear mayor is a big ol’ doodyhead. No, I haven’t been keeping up with the latest scandals, though. You see, I, um, well, I kinda work in the same buliding as the mayor. Sigh. Yeah, I work for City Hall. There’s so much crap going on there right now it’s impossible to keep it all straight. So I only pay attention to the scandals that pertain to my department.

One cute thing to come out of the blizzard–my kids were home today (they don’t normally go to day care on Tuesdays anyway), so my husband decided to take our daughter (the Little Goddess) out to play in the snow. After I got her all bundled up, she looked a bit like Ralphie’s little brother Randy, from A Christmas Story. Remember how his mom bundled him up so much he couldn’t put his arms down? Kinda like that. She had a good time, though!
