Blocking users?

I thought there was a way to block certain users’ posts, but I can’t find anything about this in the FAQ or elsewhere.

It’s just one user whose tasteless jokes and disgusting attempts and humor I’d rather not even see. I’ve been skipping past their posts for at least a year but it’s not enough. Is there some way to block their posts here so that they won’t appear in my browser?

Now that I’ve expressed the question in words, it doesn’t seem likely. But I remember reading about this feature.

from your account page go/scroll to users there add names to your ignore list.

Oh, yes, that is possible. First you have to find one post by this user, one last time, then click on his name. His description appears. Click on that again, and a new window opens where on the right you can see two buttons. One reads: Message. What this for is evident, that is not the one you want. The other is a drop down menu that reads “Normal”. If you click on that other possibilities appear, one of which is “Ignore”. That is what you are looking for.

Thanks; done.

I thought we had something special going on. >sniff<

No, not you Burpo. Your posts often make me laugh out loud. Uh, in a good way, eh?

I was going to let this thread sink, but, now that it’s resurfaced, is there a way for a user to know if anyone’s blocked them?

So it is me isn’t it? I thought we were good now.

No, not you either! Anyone else? Remember, if I don’t respond, I might just be screwing with you! :grinning:

ETA: I’ve just noticed in my OP that I meant to write “disgusting attempts at humor.” More repugnant than unamusing.

No, and just in case you weren’t aware, make sure you don’t mention that you have muted a particular person (either to that person or anyone else), unless you post that in the BBQ Pit. It’s considered an insult to do that, so make sure you’re in the forum that allows you to insult other posters.

(I’m not saying you’ve done that here, obviously, but thought that the disclaimer was worth mentioning.)

I think I’ve only blocked two posters in the last 20 years, and both of them were finally banned, so I feel justified. Assholes usually get what’s coming to them around here.

Thanks for the info; good to know. I wasn’t planning on saying who it is, and I’ve already given some hints. I think it might be good for this person to know (hence my question about knowing who’s blocked whom), but I also think they’re not a troublemaker or jerk or anything, so I wasn’t even going to point out the post or corresponding thread that led to this.

I will say, though, that it’s the first time I’ve blocked anyone, it’s just one user, and it’s a fine solution for me.

I’m better now, thanks.

Without revealing any names, is it possible to find out how many posters are blocking you?

It may not be possible in Discourse, but would it be a good idea for the blockee to know when he has been blocked, and/or by whom? Maybe that could provide positive feedback to get them to knock off whatever irksome behavior lands them on an ignore list…

Don’t want to know who, but if a significant number are blocking me that tells me I should reexamine my approach.

I haven’t blocked you, and my block list has got to be approaching or in excess of triple digits by now. I’m sure you’re fine.

I had a couple pre-Discourse but they were lost with the changeover. I have not plonked anyone since then. IMHO one of the nice features in Discourse is the avatars. When I see one belonging to a poster I’m not particularly fond of I blip right past it.

Do you want me to block you just to build up your reputation?

Not the rep I’m looking for.

In case you wanted them to know, would it also be considered an insult to tell the blocked person that they are blocked through a PM?
