Blood Donors: Where Are You?

I’d like to donate but the Red Cross has this stupid rule about not wanting blood laced with amphetamines.*

*ADHD meds

OK then, I gave blood today. It was my first time, what with not-high-enough iron levels before the kids, and pregnancy and nursing for the past few years. I had to find a babysitter and all; I made the appointment last week.

But this time I passed! I took pre-natal vitamins for a couple of days beforehand and had excellent iron. They stuck a needle that looked more appropriate for an elephant in me (and I usually need butterfly needles!), and the guy next to me got a shirt and a balloon because it was his 10-gallon day.

DangerGirl, age 4, was very interested in my owie. I had to explain why someone would give blood about 8 times (she just likes hearing it more than once). This is a kid who asks to get shots when she goes to the doctor, and she’s very interested in such things.

I suddenly have this picture in my head of a 90-year-old granny receiving your blood, performing calisthetics Benny-Hill style for 4 minutes, then keeling over from a heart attack.
