My SO likes Tom Selleck and thus likes Blue Bloods - so I grudgingly watch it with him.
I find the nepotistical premise ridiculous - Grandpa is retired NYC Police Commissioner, dad (Tom Selleck) is current NYC Police Commissioner, daughter is NYC Assistant District Attorney, one son is a NYC Detective and the other is NYC police officer and one son died who was also a NYC detective - the whole staunch Irish Catholic Reagan family pretty much runs NYC and there isn’t a crime in the entire city that they aren’t a part of/on the scene when it happens/somehow caused, etc. To say you have to totally suspend your belief to watch this show is an understatement.
However, the most recent episode pissed me off more than usual.
The crime of the week was a murder in the Hasidic Jewish community.
Detective Danny Reagan (Donnie Wahlberg) was the lead on this case and pretty much spent the entire episode ridiculing the Hasidic Jews. Despite the fact we have to watch the Reagan family kiss Catholic ass every episode and speak reverently about every nun, priest and cardinal in the city (and there have been many episodes to that end) Catholic holier-than-thou Danny Reagan made every snide comment about Hasidic Jews he could and ridiculed their traditions (even with a non-funny scene trying on a hat).
Yes, at the very beginning of the show the grandfather was shown as having had a good relationship with the aged, dying leader of this community of Hasidic Jews, but that was about the extent of it. The rest of this episode was pure bashing, ridicule and bullying. All that was missing was a bonfire and pitchforks.
First of all, I think all organized religions are bullshit cults and I don’t have any dog in this fight - they can all disappear as far as I am concerned. But if you are going to praise the Roman Catholics in every damned episode, the least you could do would be to show a bit of compassion for other, equally weird religions with different equally weird traditions and beliefs.
