WordMan did mention her and I gotta agree with him. Love Janis but that doesn’t sound like soul to me. I will put her on my “I can feel this song down in my soul” list though.
I think I watched this movie on VHS a long time ago and thought man, Dublin really likes their soul on speed. I like the Talking Head’s version better even though it certainly isn’t soul. I think I’ll add The Commitments Mr. Pitiful to the list instead.
If you can listen to Janis sing"Cry" and say it’s not soul then you have a very different idea of soul than I do.
on the list!
ETA: A Scottish kid named Paulo who sings American soul? I hope he’s alright.
Yeup.
Still not making the list but FWIW, I like this version better.
Some British blue-eyed soul:
Spencer Davis Group (lead vocals by Steve Winwood):
-“Gimme Some Lovin’”
-“I’m a Man”
Joe Cocker:
-“The Letter”
-“Feelin’ Alright”
Alex Chilton. He’s 16 here.
ETA: saw the last post. The original is still better. Feelin’ Alright is of course Winwood/Traffic as well.
Obscure but there it is.
Westbound number nine-Flaming embers
Expressway to your heart-Soul SurvivorsVan Morrison and Tom Waits skate that bluesy line. Did you know there is a genre called Soul Blues? I didn’t either until I did a google search with those two words together. Robert Cray is the example
Digging deeper into this genre, I think I’ll add Paul DeLay’s Nice and Strong to the list, only because I really like this song.
Thanks, Teeming Millions.
On the list! Gotta pick one though. Arbitrary rule of the list is only one song per act. In both these cases it comes down to personal taste. I’m a Man and, um. . . coin toss-- The Letter is on the list!
Delbert McClinton - Givin’ It Up for your Love
Paul Carrack - Nothin’ to Lose
I’ve Got Nothing To Lose almost lost a spot on the list being associated with that country song by Delbert McClinton trying to pass.
Going to sleep now. I think I may have missed more than one post. I’ll go back and check out all these links because every single one of them, even those that don’t make the playlist, are freakin’ great. Thanks guys.
I wanted to suggest Tracy Nelson, who walked that line between soul and blues, but as you can see from the linked album cover (Sweet Soul Music), her eyes were (are?) definitely brown.
Holding Back the Years, by Simply Red.
That’s quite soulful (IMHO), but now we’re getting into a pop-ier territory that would include acts like Christopher Cross, and from there it’s a short hop to Crowded House and the like…Ya gotta draw the line somewhere.
Both on the list! Always loved Expressway To Your Heart and until this moment didn’t know they weren’t black. Never heard of Flaming Embers and I’d like to know why. Why have I never heard of them?
Lonnie is a straight up bluesman. Not hearing much soul music here.
Simply Red and Rick Astley both make the list. Chris Cross sooooooo straddles the line. Oh and it isn’t a Rick Roll if you know what’s coming.
ETA: Rick has over 146 MILLION views. That’s a lot of Rick Rolls
