Driving to work this morning, I pass this bundle of what looks to be feathers in the opposite lane. I assume it’s a dead bird and try not to look, but all of a sudden it flutters…it’s alive!
No one’s coming, so I turn around real quick and stop in front of him. Hazard lights on, I dash out, scoop him up and dash back in. He’s breathing quickly with his wings splayed, but not moving his legs.
Fortunately I’m right next to work, so I leave him in the car while I grab a small box to house him in. I make a few calls and get ahold of a local bird sanctuary. A friend of mine picked him up and took him there just now.
I hope the little guy was just stunned and he’ll recover quickly! I’m so glad I saw him before someone ran him over.
I love Blue Jays so here’s to hoping he’s well.
They are truly gorgeous birds. I know they have a reputation for being territorial and a bully to other birds, but they are certainly striking. Such a pretty blue offset by black.
Here’s a closeup I found online.
That’ll teach him not to jaywalk.
