Blue Man Group: WTF?

I saw the Blue Man Group last fall in Las Vegas. It was easily the best, most entertaining show I’ve ever seen, but trying to describe it to someone in a coherant manner is simply not possible.

Back in the 80’s as a teenager I wished someday I’d become filthy rich. I’d buy the rights to the smurfs and promo the hell out of a special prime time smurf special.

Where I would KILL them ALL! BWUHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Oh great. Now I’ve got an image stuck in my head of the Blue Man Group hitting the Smurfs with PVC pipes…

What was great about “The Blue Man Group” for me was that it was totally unexpected. Paid my money and got entertained! WTF!

Got to see the “Complex” tour in Grand Forks N.D. I was only vaguely aware of who they were.
At the end of the concert, I had to go and retrieve my socks, as they had been blown clean off.

I considered joining them as their website has a rather extensive “Help Wanted” section. Alas, I am too old, too fat, and have no talent at all on drums. Not even a smigion.
Sigh.

I saw that, too; I figure that if I did nothing but practice for about three months, I could get my drumming back into good enough shape to at least not be laughed out of the audition.

However, I’d have to grow five inches and somehow develop an “athletic build”, neither of which is likely to happen.

Sigh.

And the best part is if somebody comes into the show late. This happend when my ex and I saw them in Boston a few years ago. All of a sudden they stopped what they were doing, one grabbed a videocamera, and followed the stragglers to their seats. Sure enough, the big screen on stage displayed the output from the camera.

I’m not sure if that part is staged or not, but the same people were brought on stage later for the scene I call “the feast”.

Well worth the price of admission.

Now here’s the odd thing. I’ve seen them do short bits on talk shows and (Intel) commercials. I’ve never been that impressed. They’re OK, but they don’t grab me. Then there’s this thread where people I respect say they (meaning the BMG) are fantastic. There’s some sort of artstic (or popular delusion) thing going on here. Can anyone say what it is?

F$%# all you Smurf haters!!

:stuck_out_tongue:

It’s the difference between a song clip and a concert. A BMG experience is something that builds and builds as the show goes along. I’ve seen them three times, once when they were just starting out (I think) back in the early 90s. (Late 80s?) And it’s okay. Then it’s good. Then it’s fantastic.

What E-Sabbath said. Each bit by itself is not far from ordinary. But the cumulative effect is amazing.
