Ok, so the commercial goes something like this: A young couple are traveling in a 3rd world country when they come across some old woman trying make a couple of pesos or whatever by selling these dolls.
Old Woman: “Worry dolls take away all worries.”
Canadian couple: “These are lovely, but do you have anything bigger? We have big worries, grande worries. You know, with our investments. Investmentitos? Sometimes they’re up, sometimes they’re down.”
I know it’s only a commercial but this really bugs me. This couple can afford to travel abroad, have “investmentitos” and they are complaining to some 90 year old woman who is trying to feed herself by selling stupid dolls to foreigners about their money issues. Doesn’t BMO think this is a bit insensitive. Anyway, just wanted to rant and felt this was a good place for it.
Here’s the ad for non-Canucks (warning: sound and video, but otherwise SFW)
I actually despise this entire ad campaign by BMO… the worry dolls in particular, because it’s rather condescending on top of being irritating, but the whole series just make me want to kick small puppies.
Would have been funnier if they had just desperately bought every worry doll she had and asked if she had more in the back while their arms were overflowing, and if the wife had started assigning worry-names to each one as they stood there…
