Bo Schembechler is dead at 77

ESPN just reported that legendary Michigan football coach Bo Schembechler was pronounced dead at the hospital after collapsing while filming a TV show.

No details yet as to the cause of his death, though I think it’s safe to assume it was his heart. He had two heart attacks previously, IIRC, and he was just hospitalized for heart problems a couple of weeks ago again while filming a TV show.

I think it’s hard to ignore the irony that he passed on the day before one of the biggest Michigan-Ohio State games in the history of the rivalry.

As someone working in Ann Arbor, with a HUGE office tailgate party, word will spread around here quickly.

Every other person is wearing Yellow and Blue or grey and red. It’s kinda fun, with all the good-natured ribbing.

:frowning:

This is going to make one sappy broadcast of an otherwise awsome football game. I bet we won’t go 2 plays staight without some maudlin refrence. There won’t be enough room on helmets for tribute stickers.

Like porno, I’m gonna have to watch with the sound turned down now!

Yeah, that’s right. Tackle him for Old Bo. You get him good. Get him behind the line of scrimmage. Who’s a bad boy?

Give it to him…give it to him…give it…awwwwww yeah…give him a Big Sack.

Awwww baby…loss of downs.
I feel better just watching that.

I’d say the Dead Schembechlers are going to have trouble getting gigs for a while now.

What’s the over-under on completely inappropriate signs getting on camera at the game now?

Tell me, what are these legends?

Well, son of a bitch. My MIL will be depressed after this.

My in-laws had a cat named Shemmy, named after Shembeckler. (The current one is named Kipke). At least the coach outlived the cat.

E.

Works great for Michigan:

  1. They get fired-up and win one for the gipper (like the A&M bonfire upset vs Texas in 1999)

  2. They can blame their loss on being distracted (like Miami did with Maryland this year)

Seriously, though, I wonder if this will have any impact on the players themselves. I doubt too many are old enough to remember Bo’s days at Michigan (until 1989).

But am I wincing when I think of the TV broadcast

Well, now he and Woody can watch the big game together. Assuming they are in the same place.

Sadly, the first thing that worried me when I heard the news was the possibility that some unruly fans might actually boo if the stadium does a moment of silence for him tomorrow.

the players were 2 years old when he retired from coaching.

Bo apparently addressed the team on Thursday. He’s been involved to one degree or another with Michigan athletics all along. The current kids might not remember the days when Bo was actually coaching, but they’ll certainly remember him.
