Years and years back (10) I worked for a game store (The Game Keeper). One of our biggest games back then was a game called Abalone I thought it odd at the time, that it came in a hexagonal box. Of course, once you open it, and see that the board itself is hexagonal, it makes perfect sense. [[I have the English version of the same box design. The caption in the lower right says " ‘Game of the Decade’ International Games Festival, Cannes French Riviera"]]
The claim “Game of the Decade” was taken quite seriously by the game’s creators, and on the side of the box, each side: [http://www.boardgamegeek.com/image/335942] The caption reads “Winner of more awards than any other game in the world.”
I can’t personally verify that, but if you have played Abalone, you know that it is … a rare breed of a game. Very good game indeed.
But I digress. I Remind you, that this game was, bigger in the US back in 1999.
Then, in 2009, I see something else.
Blokus Trigon also comes in a Hexagonal box.
An insert in my copy is a very colorful glossy piece of paper, stating that Blokus [All variants of Blokus] is “The Most Awarded Game of the 21st Century!”. It proudly displays 20 or so designations of awards. [Interesting to note, that the 21st century has only been a decade]
**What other games come in a hexagonal box, and how do you rate it? What awards has it won? **
