Bob Bennett losing his seat

It appears Bob Bennett has been primaried out of his senatorial seat in Utah. As far as right wingers go I thought he pretty dam far to the right. He’s lost to someone even more right wing then himself? How is that even possible?

Does this make an elected Democrat in the state a possibility?

What’s going on in Utah and what should the rest of us expect?

It’s difficult to imagine anyone put forward as Republican in Utah losing the general.

But isn’t the nominee still undecided, between Tim Bridgewater and Mike Lee? And are their politics really known?

A cursory reading suggests this was more anti-incumbent fervor than anything.

What I noticed was that Mitt Romney did go to Utah to support Bennett.

He failed to convince most delegates.

Seeing how many Teabaggers also see Romney as not “pure enough” I wonder also if the presidential aspirations of Romney are toast.

Strange political times are afoot. The mid terms will be interesting.

Maybe the GOP will push so far to the right that their election candidate in 2012 has a snowball in hell chance of winning. Then again after Scott Brown, that person might actually win.

IIRC, its the reddist state in the nation, at least as measured by the margins it gives GOP Prez candidates. So even without an incumbant, it’d probably be a tough pickup for the Dems. (also, glancing at wikipedia, it appears the Dem primayr candidates include an accountant from SLC and a former member of the Liquor control board, not exactly a powerhouse of political experience for the prospective nominees)

That said, Bennet was a really random target for the teapartiers. In listings of GOP senators by ideaology, he wasn’t even in the top 15 or so most liberal Republicans.

Well, Scott Brown is probably the least conservative Republican in the Senate, and definitely in the top three (with Snowe and Collins, of course). And most sentient beings can run a better senate campaign than Martha Coakley did. I’d hope that by now every Democrat that’s up for re-election realizes that no matter how blue their state, they can’t treat the election as being over once they secure the nomination.

He had voted for TARP, and had worked with Ron Wyden to propose a health reform plan. People didn’t forgive him his TARP vote.

Romney never had a chance of getting the GOP nomination, even before the Tea Party popped up. The GOP’s base is the South and there is no way a Mormon is going to get any support from the conservative Christians down there. In the 2008 primary, Romney managed to win at least one state in every region except the South.

He and 32 other Republicans (including Utah’s other Senator).

What sort of backgrounds do the Republican prospects in that race have?

Also, I just learned that Utah law would prevent him running as an independent (he’d have to run as a write-in candidate). Why is that so?

And some of the ones who did are suffering for it.

The deadline for getting on the ballot has passed.

I wasn’t surprised to learn that he had been voted out in the primary. It is getting really scary in Utah. The state legislature recently passed a law that a woman could be prosecuted for a miscarriage. The law was passed because a woman recently paid some guy and his friends to beat her in the hopes of forcing one (as you can imagine, it’s not exactly easy to get an abortion in Utah for many, many reasons). I’m not sure how they plan to enforce this. I hope every woman who goes to the hospital for a miscarriage doesn’t get the third degree from her doctor. That’s just one example of a lot of insanity. Several of my previous normal family members have become fringe survivalists, deciding to “live off the grid” so Obama can’t hurt them. And they’re not that exceptional around here.

So, how is he losing his seat? Subway diet? No carbs?

Bob Bennet. Not conservative enough. Got to say that a few more times, 'cause its not sinking in. Bob Bennet. Not conservative enough!

This is all a result of the most dreadful nemesis of a comfortable democratic society: apathy. The energized minorities assume disproportionate power, a bunch of chaotic meatheads can actually affect national politics. And its mostly because we can’t get the dull normals to take some responsibility for their own damned country!

I am totally committed to power to the people, and will not waver, but I’m damned if I don’t find myself wishing we deserved it more.

What exactly is bad about Mike Lee?

Don’t just say he is too far right, be more specific about what is wrong with him.

Who are you asking? I can’t find where anyone in this thread that expressed any opinion bad or good about Lee.

Look at the comment above mine.
