Batman the sixties version was going to get another season on another station but the sets were torn up. Suppose after Gilligan is canceled ceaser Romeo is unavailable i was wondering how Gilligan would do in the role. After Gilligan wrapped up Denver did the good guys.dustys trail far out space nuts nothing that last.
Bob Denver? :dubious: Surely you’re joking!
Russell Johnson (The Professor) I could imagine in the role, if I stretch my imagination a lot. But not Gilligan. Not in a million years. Even if they did get John Astin (Gomez Addams) to play The Riddler. (Thankfully, that didn’t last long.) Didn’t care much for anyone else subbing for Julie Newmar as The Catwoman, either (not even Lee Meriwether.)
I do believe he’s serious. And don’t call him Shirley.
I’ll cast a vote for Dick Van Dyke.
Bob Denver played idiots well. The Joker and other classic Batman nemeses were not idiots.
“Casting against type” would be a generous statement here.
It could have worked - we’re talking about a series that had Batman in a surfing competition against the Joker, boxing against the Riddler, and meeting Colonel Klink while climbing up the side of a building on his batrope.
For some reason I was just thinking about this show this morning. It seems surprising that a show that was so popular only lasted 3 seasons - they should have had 6 seasons and a movie as well as a Batgirl spinoff (OK, they did have a movie…). I am glad that it survived in reruns during my childhood though.
Oh, come on. Eartha Kitt was freakin’ amazing.
My favorites were Victor Buono’s King Tut and Rudy Vallee’s Lord Marmaduke Pfogg.
Just about any ham actor could play a villain in the Batman TV series. Denver was a clown, but not much of a ham, it’s just not his kind of role.
I could see him as the Riddler. Joker doesn’t fit him IMHO.
I’m not sure who was around in the mid-60s who would have been a good Joker. Romero certainly wasn’t. Nowhere near the level of Meredith’s Penguin.
How about Timothy Carey?
And most of them did.
Tommy Smothers maybe, but not Dick.
I guess Maryann could be Harley Quinn.
Jim Backus as the Penguin. Probably not as good as Burgess, but serviceable.
Now I’m wondering who would be a good Joker if they revived the 60’s-style Batman TV series today. And, more generally, who-all could/would play the villains on the show.
Mark Hamill makes a fine Joker already.
I’d pick his brother Jerry instead.
There almost was a Batgirl spinoff. You can see the pilot here. It co-stars Adam West (he sure was in a lot of unaired pilots. :D) as millionaire playboy Bruce Wayne and Burt Ward as his youthful ward, Dick Grayson.
Paul Lynde would have worked.
Cesar Romero was already a bad Joker. He wasn’t menacing at all. It was just that kind of show. Even Liberace was a villain.
Nobody ever likes a Joker, until the movie is done. As long as they don’t go with johnny Depp, I’d give anyone a chance.
The authoritative list of actors who would be totally miscast as the Joker:
- Bob Newhart
- Buster Keaton
- Bob Denver
- Slim Pickens
- Rick Moranis
- Peter Falk
- Don Knotts
- John Wayne
- William Shatner
- Lorne Green
See, he’s number 3 on the list.
I’ll be in my [del]bunk[/del] hammock.
