Actually, I swear the line was Ashley swallows. But really, who cares?
Surely Norm meant to tank. I thought his routine was some sort of Kaufmanesque joke on jokes, an intentionally bad routine that ends up being funny because of how bad it was.
Leachman was awesome. Jeff Ross was disappointing, he has done much better in other roasts.
I expected far more profanity considering the stories I’ve heard on how filthy Bob Saget’s humor can be.
A very small clip of Norm MacDonald’s performance.
If there is a person who has definitive, personal proof of which is which, I don’t know if I’d give him a high five or hold him tightly while he cried.
…but really who doesn’t want to watch Peter Fonda pick blueberries?
That was hilarious. To me that’s the sort of thing that would be funny for several minutes, but would get tedious after 5 min or so.
I saw that it was on three times in a row last night. One of the showings started at midnight so I dvr’d that one.
Does anyone know it they let that one go “uncensored”?
Yeah, that was a hell of a lot funnier than I expected. It’s not just the lame jokes, it’s the way he drives home the lame punchlines. I used to give Norm short shrift, but the guy knows comedy, for damn sure.
They let the word “asshole” go unbleeped in the first few minutes. Unless that was a mistake, I’d say that one was “uncensored”.
“Fuck” and “cock” were bleeped. So it was definitely censored, which surprised me in light of the late showing. I mean, even Chris Rock was uncensored. Maybe if they repeat it late Friday or Saturday it’ll go through uncensored.
You’ll notice I put “uncensored” in quotes. Comedy Central isn’t HBO, so I meant “Comedy Central’s Usual Late-Night Level of Vulgarity”, which would bleep those words, but not others.
I loved Norms well-wishers joke. “…they want to murder you in a well according to this card.”
Jeffrey Ross, as always, is just in a different league from everybody else at these things. I loved “Chloris Leachmann is so old… Shakespeare did her in the park” and “Did you come here in a limo or a time machine?”
It’s funny- when Jon Lovitz did his thing, I thought ‘that was sort of an anti-roast,’ because the gay jokes were so over the top they seemed like parodies of “this guy is so gay” jokes. (If you’ve heard any Simpsons DVD commentaries with him you know Lovitz can’t do any other kind of jokes except gay jokes.) And then Norm MacDonald came on and did a real anti-roast. It was pretty fascinating and some of it was really funny, especially the well stuff already quoted here.
I have to say… Lewis Black really seemed to be mailing it in here.
Norm McDonald was brilliant.
I think Revtim is right about it being a AFHV spoof.
At the end Norm says “This concludes the joke…” and is immediately cut off by the audience applauding the fact that he’s done. It’s too bad because that would have explained exactly what he was going for. The comedians obviously understood it. I think it’s pretty ballsy that he didn’t wait until the applause died down to explain himself. Sort of a giant “fuck you” to the crowd for being stupid.
I think the Andy Kauffman comparison is an entirely reasonable interpretation. The more I see from Norm the more respect I have for him.
I think Comedy Central only does the full uncensored bits on Saturday nights, after midnight.
I set my DVR to catch the Saturday at 8pm show. That’ll be the 11pm east coast show, and that has traditionally been the uncensored one.
