I want to say Im thinking of Bobby Gentry
First, welcome to the SDMB!
Second, why are you thinking of Bobbie Gentry? Did you hear one of her songs?
In looking up her Wikipedia entry, I see that she’s still alive, but she’s been completely retired from public life since 1982 (which I did not know), and has not done any recordings, given any interviews, or done any public appearances since then.
Many, many years ago, my first Straight Dope post as ‘What got thrown off the Tallahatchie Bridge’!
Pass the biscuits please.
Just saw this in a book I’m reading (“Long Haul”, about serial and other murders committed by long-haul truckers):
“An unidentified body was found on August 20, 2003, under the Tallahatchie Bridge in the mudflats near Choctaw Ridge in Lafayette County, Mississippi. The whole scene sounded like a macabre remix of “Ode To Billie Joe”, Bobbie Gentry’s 1967 chart-topping single.”*
*the serial killer implicated in that murder apparently liked to throw bodies off bridges, although not necessarily into muddy water.
I want to say “she slit the sheet, the sheet she slit, and on the slitted sheet I sit”.
Funny you should say that - I’ve been thinking of Braindrill recently.
There’s always a Becky
We’re always thinking about her.
I’m thinking of a number between one and ten thousand.
Yeah, @jinkzx, it’s not like you’re special.
Just funnin’ with ya. Welcome to the Dope.
Y’all remember to wipe your feet.
Is it 711?
I’m kind of interested to learn why she completely retired from public life in the early 1980s. But since she hasn’t given an interview in more than 40 years, I doubt my curiosity will be sated.
If you married Jim Stafford would you show your face in public?
My cat’s breath smells like cat food.
It is always 42.
From 1969-1980, Gentry was married and divorced three times, she had a long-running contract dispute with Capitol Records which kept her from releasing any new music for several years, and when she finally released a new album it flopped. One of her songs suggested some of her fans were over the top in their affection for her.Instead of touring, she performed strictly in Vegas. She made buckets of money and proved herself to be financially wise. And when she had a baby, she pretty much quit performing entirely.
Young, rich, ten years of personal and professional turbulence, raising a kid on her own – she probably just wanted to be left alone, and decided she liked it better that way.
First, a banana duct taped to a wall is considered priceless art.
Then, this thread.
I must confess that I just don’t get popular culture these days.
