Bobby Kimball of Toto- unscheduled small club performance

So, I went out tonight to my regular Monday night hang out, a laid back little music venue where my friends always play music.

During the set break they had arranged a surprise guest set by Bobby Kimball. On his own at the piano he covered Elton John’s “Burn Down the Mission” which he medleyed into the pop standard “At Last”. He then played a song of his own that I did not know.

He wanted to end the set there, he seemed like he didn’t want to intrude too much on the stage time of the scheduled musicians. The other musicians and the (small) crowd managed to get him to get back on stage, but he insisted that a few of the other musicians join him. He sat down at the piano again and led two percussionists and a guitar player in an improvised blues jam.

He tried once more to leave the stage, but the guitarist led the percussionists into the opening of “Hold the Line”. Kimball briefly pretended he didn’t want to sing it, but then sat down at the piano again and joined the rest of them and performed the song.

Pretty cool for a Monday night.
