First of all, people don’t usually suspend from the ceiling directly. A specially built suspension rig is used.
And probably you should read the Suspension FAQ. Lots of answers.
I might do a suspension, if I had the chance. It would be an interesting experience.

I’ve been interested in it awhile myself, and I remember back in high school learning about the Sun Dance and O-Kee-Pa suspension rituals of some native american groups.
Rationalizations for something of this nature, of course, are going to be different for each person participating but for most I would venture that it has both spiritual and physical significance. As with any sort of ritual event it can be a testing of spirit and body.
