Madari

Aaj Tujhse Jo

Aaj(today) Tujhse(to you) Jo(whatever) Kehna(say) Hai(is) Kehne De(let it be said)
Tera(your) Dil(heart) Mere(me) Paas(with/near) Rehne De(let it be)

Let me say today whatever/all that I have to tell you, let your heart be with me.

nice!

Lagaan, the first Bollywood movie ever nominated for an Academy Award, is the first Bollywood movie I ever saw and I loved the music immediately (along with the story, the acting, the scenery and everything else about it). It’s hard to pick favorites, but this one is pretty great, when the village men finally decide to get serious about playing cricket with the snotty British:

Chale Chalo

Oh, and this one too…

The sheer joy of the drought-stricken village when they see storm clouds rolling in is infectious, without even understanding a word they say:

Ghanan Ghanan

And just because one can never hear too much Asha Bhosle*, one of the greatest playback artists of Indian cinema (look at that IMDB page!!!):

Radha Kaise Na Jale

  • The “Asha” of Fatboy Slim’s “Brimful of Asha” (though there’s an unfortunate lack of Asha in the song itself).

@Equipoise - very good share.

Asha Bhosle is little sister of Lata Mangeshkar btw.

Edit to add, I know! What an amazing musical family!

A bit off-topic, but speaking of Asha Bhosle, she is very open-minded about lending her voice to non-Bollywood music. Here’s Asha singing “My Shooting Star” for the group West India Company. It’s extremely influenced by Indian music, but was, from what I understand, written for a dance show for a troupe called La La La Human Steps. Here’s a phenomenal video, not from the show, but featuring the two main dancers, Édouard Lock and Louise Lecavalier. It was played on a Bette Midler special called Mondo Beyondo.

Here’s another couple of songs from the album New Demons, featuring Asha: “O Je Suis Seul” (I don’t know who the operatic voice belongs to). “Juggernaut - Ude Cha Panchi” has a bit of Asha in it.

Not Asha, and not Bollywood, but a couple of other really great songs from the album feature the wonderful Indian singer Priya Khajuria. “Bengalis From Outer Space” is insane and amazing! Priya’s vocals kick in at around 2:50. On the album “Alaap - Shankara” segues into the above song “My Shooting Star” with the sound of the Tardis.

Ram Chahe Leela .

Dum Dum (with subtitles)

Fantastic dancing number from the 1990s -
Husn Hai Suhana

saree ke fall sa

Marvelous melody song from the old times sung by Lata Mangeshkar -

Tera Mera Pyar Amar

Tera(yours) mera(mine) pyar(love) amar(immortal), phir(then) kyon(why) mujhko(to me) lagta(happens) dar(fear)
Mere(my) jeevan(life) sathi(companion) bata(tell), dil(heart) kyon(why) dhadke(beats) reh reh(again n again) kar(after)

Even after knowing that our love is immortal, why do I feel frightened.
Oh My life-companion, tell me, why does the heart then beats fast.

Lahu Munh Lag Gaya Song

Changed thread title from “Nice song” to “Bollywood songs” at OP’s request.

Thanks twickster.
Indian songs and Bollywood songs - maybe one and the same thing for non-Indians.

Chokra Jawaan
Ishaqzaade

nice old song -
Mhare Hiwda Mein Naache Mor

Gulabi

It seemed less confusing than the notably ambiguous word “Indian.” I figured since the first few posts were all referring to Bollywood, that was the topic.

Makes sense.
I’d have preferred “Hindi Songs” but “Bollywood Songs” is also good.
