Anybody else headed to Tennessee next month for Bonnaroo?
I couldn’t believe the lineup when I saw it–it’s like they went through my CD collection. I’m a longtime Springsteen fanboy (past few albums notwithstanding), and I know he’ll bring it for a crowd that size. I was a huge Phish fan in their day, and I’m skeptical about their reunion, but in all honesty I probably would have gone somewhere to see them anyway.
Beasties? Byrne? Wilco? Yes, please. I’m even excited about Snoop Dogg. I’ve never been a big Nine Inch Nails fan, but I’ve always wanted to check them out live. And that’s just the big headliners; the small-stage offerings are just as good, if not better.
The people I’ve been with the past two years are sitting this one out. I have a media pass (through my radio show), so I’m planning to go anyway, even if I’m going solo. If any Dopers are going with a big crew and wouldn’t mind a straggler pitching a tent in your vicinity, drop me a PM. (I may have an extra ticket, even.)
I was hugely excited to go, and was really looking forward to Neko Case, Yeasayer, TV on the Radio, NIN, the Beasties, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Jenny Lewis, The Decemberists, Merle, Ani, Elvis Costello, Okkervil River, St. Vincent, Cage the Elephant, and Delta Spirit but the friend that first got me to go in '06 is saving money for a wedding, and the friend I went with last year will still be under probation at work, so even if he could take time off, Bonnaroo’s probably not how he should spend the time, so I’m not going this year.
It really, really sucks because I’ve been looking forward to it since about an hour after I left last year’s festival, but, truth be told, I don’t really have the money myself, so this is probably for the best. There’s always '10, though, and I will be there even if I have to go alone.
Hope you have a blast.
I was hoping for Bonnaroo this year (never been), but it looks like it’s going to be Lollapalooza for me instead! Most of the bands I really wanted to see will be at Loll. anyway (Andrew Bird, Bon Iver, Band of Horses, Decemberists, of Montreal, etc).
Have fun!
Yeah, as big of a 'roo fan I am, Lollapalooza definitely has the better line-up this year.
Bonnaroo’s only an hour north of me, though, so the convenience and cost can’t be beat.
Being in the biz, the only one I’d be really excited to see is King Sunny Ade, and perhaps Femi Kuti, son of Fela. Their smaller acts this year aren’t that great, but everyone should check out Tobacco (lead singer of Black Moth Super Rainbow; released an album last year with Aesop Rock), MURS (one of the few rappers present in the lineup, will be good depending on venue), Chairlift (know that iPod commerical about strawberries and wounded knees?), Animal Collective (for the sheer madness of it all), and that’s it, really. I mean, all the indie kids will be at Girl Talk/Crystal Castles, so I suppose that’s a “if possible” show.
King Sunny Ade is one I’m really looking forward to. I didn’t realize he was still around.
The small stages definitely have enough to keep me busy. I’ve learned in the past few years that making a schedule really isn’t worth it; it’s better to flag some can’t miss shows and then go where the mood strikes from there.
Get off my lawn you goddamn hippies!
It looks pretty cool, but unfortunately no. It is logistically undesirable for me.
First of all, I live in New Jersey so there is no way I’m flying to a whole other state to see Bruce Springsteen.
Second, I’m already seeing Beastie Boys and will probably come across Yeah Yeah Yeahs, MGMT, and probably a few other of some of the same bands at this year’s All Points West Festivalin Jersey City. While APW isn’t as big or well known as Bonnaroo or Lollapalooza (it’s only in it’s second year), it has the distinct advantage of being a 20 minute Light Rail ride from my place. Thus allowing me to actually sleep in my own bed at night. I highly recommend it as an alternative if you happen to be in the NY/NJ area and don’t want to travel to TN for your annual summer jam band/indie/alternative/hip hop festival fix.
Camping is part of the appeal to me. I like being on site for all four days, and though I’m pretty miserable by Saturday night, it’s an integral part of the experience to me.
Just posting because I’ll be leaving tomorrow night! Check out The Zen Arcade to follow my escapades.
And my show is live right now (Tuesday) until 10PM Eastern; I’m doing my annual Bonnaroo Previoo! Listen at http://www.wmmtfm.org
Enjoy yourself, man. I am happy for you, but simultaneously jealous. I’m currently listening to the Bonnaroo station on last.fm, but it’s obviously just a shadow of a pale imitation.
Bonnaroooooo!
