Books on starting a small business

A friend is in the next year or so wanting to open a small business (specifically a specialty book store). I’d like to get her a book on the process of opening and running a business for Christmas and would like your recommendations. Books that specifically deal with retail stores are preferable. I looked at Amazon and I saw the “for Dummies”-type books but if you’ve read some such books and can give me more guidance it would be much appreciated.

Call the Small Business Administration in your area. They have lots of very helpful information and workshops your friend could use. They’re a terrific resource of anyone starting a small business.

Community colleges often have classes for small biz start-up.
The cost is stunning, far more than one usually guesses.

The college classes are a real eye opener. Stuff to consider ya never think of.
A business plan, and knowing how to construct a realistic one, is essential to success.

The best biz to be in is working with something you love. Just like learning to play a musical instrument, pick one you love.

People that say money can’t buy happiness, never had either one.

OK, thanks for the suggestions, but let me reiterate.

Looking for books that I can give as a Christmas present. I’m sure she will utilize the Small Business Administration as a resource but I can’t exactly wrap up the SBA and plunk it under the bloody tree, now can I?

One book I have found I keep going back to, even though I was already in business for years before I’d read it, is “Small Time Operator”. I’ve recommended it to lots of folks over the years and all have found it helpful.
