"Boondocks" repeats debunked 'Bush gave $43M to Taliban' story

The ‘Dubya gave $43 million to the Taliban’ story was demolished quite effectively in this thread back on September 19.

So it was weird, even being aware of the lag time that the daily comics have to deal with, to see it in today’s Boondocks.

Looks like Aaron McGruder might could use a fact-checker.

Maybe Huey could use a fact-checker.

Kids! Here’s a fun way to spend your Saturday - Read through this thread and mentally replace “Doonesbury” with “Boondocks.”

My Apologies, having read the cartoon (which I should have done in the first place) I regogize that it is fundementally different from the Doonesbury cartoon in that there is no apparent joke, just the unfounded rumor. In addition, the mistaken information is pertinant to verifiable fact, rather than to opinion.

It’s just a matter of being familiar with the strip. On 9/30, Huey was campaigning for “Al Sharpton 2004”. None of the other characters take his paranoid schemes seriously, nor is the audience meant to.

Oh c’mon, Rilch. I’ve been reading it since it first showed up in the Washington Post, which was about a year and a half ago, I think.

The earlier strips in this particular series had Huey giving info to the FBI hotline that was actually true, which surely was the point. You think McGruder meant for the reader to consider the stuff in the true-but-damning category to be some wild exaggeration of Huey’s? Gimme a break.

And if McGruder expected the reader to recognize these facts coming from Huey as true, when Huey was saying them on October 5, exactly why should the reader be expected to shift gears on October 6? There are no cues in the strip to say this info should be regarded any differently.

Well, it’s not a wild exaggeration of Huey’s; it’s a wild exaggeration, full stop.

Does the October 6 date refer to when it was written and not when it wasc released to the public, or is Newsday behind? Riley wants to change the street name in today’s comic for me. And the Al Sharpton comic appeared in my paper on that day, so it’s not time differences.

Of course! You all live in another dimension!

Somehow, I think I’ve missed an option, but the Dope’s purpose is to fight ignorance, so I’m asking.

The mystery word “wasc” should be “was”. Doh!

The “street name change” storyline is an old one that Newsday is running rather than the current one. There’s an MPSIMS thread from a few days ago on the matter.

After today’s strip, I really have a hard time feeling sympathetic towards the strip for getting “censored”. Claiming that Bush gave the Taliban $43 million in May is an outright lie. Especially since the question of how much of it went to bin Laden’s weaponry implies that the aid was monetary.

For those not familiar, the US provided (as it has in the past) humanitarian aid in the form of food and medical supplies (IIRC) to the people of Afghanistan. It did not give money to the Taliban.

I’m going by publication dates. But lots of people tell me I live in another dimension.
