I’m calling it, It’s over, swept Cleveland, Swept the Chicago and then swept Cleveland again. Tigers in the Playoffs.
Yeah, they win the opportunity to play New York or Boston.
(although they *did *beat the Yankees in post-season in '06)
mmm
If they end up with a better record than Texas, they also get to host the ALDS.
After this weekend, the Wild Card race in the AL looks a bit tighter than it did at the beginning of the month. The Rays just swept the Red Sox, and are now only 3.5 games back.
The two teams have a four-game series next week that could play a big part in deciding who makes the postseason, although the Red Sox still have to be favorites. Not only are they ahead, but they have 6 more games against Baltimore, while the Rays have 7 against the Yankees.
Agree, the Red Sox should still win, but the Rays just made it a lot more interesting. And if you read some of the locker room quotes after the Sunday game it seems like the Rays are at least in David Ortiz’s head.
At the rate they are closing in, hosting the ALCS is a possibiliity too now.
O ye of little faith…the Giants are only 6 games back in the loss column for the Wildcard! They’ve still got a chance!!
At least that’s what they keep telling me on the radio today :dubious:
For what it’s worth, the Cardinals are also trying to creep up on the Braves.
Since neither of them is the Orioles or the Rockies, it’s a big old “who cares” for me, but still. 4 1/2 back; it’s doable.
Ever? I think not. In 1968, the Cardinals were up by 14 games on September 1, and the Tigers were 7 games up.
Very true. Crap, I hope they don’t waste all this good baseball now.
And it’s official , In the Playoffs. and with the way the game changes in the post season, where a good pitcher can win a series pretty much alone, Verlander and Papa grande seem like this may be a bit of fun.
and with yanquis losing, the league top dog seems pretty close
/half zombie revival…
Just like Selig planned it.
It’s funny how we went from having the Wild Card races wrapped up on 9/3 to the very real possibility of two one-game playoffs tomorrow where the winner moves on and the loser goes home.
ETA: Or not so funny, if you’re a BoSox fan like me.
Indeed, although the games are interesting, this sucks. And to think back on Sept. 6 I only half meant it when I said…
Jose Reyes went into last night’s game with a .00003 lead over Ryan Braun for the NL batting title. Reyes went 3-6 with two home runs, raising his lead to .001.
Reyes got a bunt hit in his first at bat today, and the Mets pulled him. Braun now needs to go 3-4 tonight to win the batting title.
While this is bad form on the Mets’ part IMHO, it is no big deal. Braun and his team get to go to the playoffs while Reyes and his team get to go home.
And Reyes is a free agent with a batting title on his resume.
True, but with the Moneyball stat heads who devalue batting average in charge now, that’s a nice thing but no big deal. The big deal is how much of a bonus Reyes has in his current contract for winning the BA title, and that’s a big deal only to him, his spouse and his agent.
I’m pretty sure any bonus based on actual skills is not allowed in the MLB, so Reyes wouldn’t get anything for winning the batting title.
Maybe not specified in his contract, but having a batting title on your resume cannot hurt when his next contract is negotiated.
