Being born in Northern Ohio, I’ll be rooting for the Indians, who have gotten almost no attention this year, to pull it off, making Cleveland the home of Two Champion teams (eat your heart out, LA, NY and Chicago).
Bummer that the Yankees fell short this year, but there are just too many holes on that team. It was so insane to have 3 top closers but no top starters, glad to see they unloaded some of the excess and they have some younger talent now.
I guess it would be nice if the Cubs won, but that would kind of kill the mystique of the team. No longer the lovable losers, they’d be just another team.
I’m thrilled that the Mets may be in it. Consider:
They lost three of their starting pitchers. A fourth never came back from surgery as expected.
Two members of their opening day lineup, plus a key substitute, are out for the season
Their #2 slugger and their best defensive outfielder missed most of the year.
Two of their opening day outfielders played terribly until the past month.
Their big deadline acquisition couldn’t hit his weight (until this week)
Two major players on the team were released by other clubs, who ate big contracts thinking it was money lost.
Their one stud pitcher standing has a bone spur in his elbow.
Their second best pitcher is 43 years old.
Their other two starters have started 14 games between them.
And with all that, they’ve been the hottest team in baseball the past month and a half.
Given all that happened, it should have been a very disappointing year. But they are two wins away (and given they’re playing the Phillies, that’s certainly doable) from getting the wild card. I don’t see them necessarily going to the series, but it will be interesting.
Correct me if I am wrong but I remember reading that all starting Mets pitchers at the beginning of this season (2016) had had Tommy John surgery, which was a first.
I am very tempted to go to Game 2 of the Dodgers/Nats series now that I’m in the DC area. But I’ve got two teams in the playoffs this year, and I’m thinking that I’m more inclined to save my money in case somebody actually makes the World Series. I’ve never been to a WS game, and I don’t think I’d pass up the opportunity if someone I cared about was playing in it.
Well, my Nats have clinched the second-best record in the National League and home-field advantage against the Dodgers in the NLDS.
But I wish I were more optimistic about our chances. Ramos, out for the season. Strasburg likely out for the season. Murphy (an MVP candidate) still nursing an injury, though coach says he’ll be ready to go for Game 1. Harper having a rough year. Losing record against the Dodgers this season. I dunno.
If Toronto and Baltimore finish tied, do they have a playoff to see who gets the seed for the Wild Card game, or will they just flip a coin to decide where it will be played?
