So I was in Bawstun yesterday with the Barbarian tribe (family birthday excursion), and in the late afternoon we are strolling wearily through the Common. We went north of the Frog Pond, because I wanted one look at “Cheers” before we caught the T out of town. Right about the time we passed the pond, some deranged loon stabbed two park rangers on the other side, near the Soldiers & Sailors Monument. It was a last minute choice to skip a loop around that way; we would have been right in the middle of the event.
All we knew is that every emergency vehicle in Boston descended on the park in the next file minutes - cops sealing every entrance and driving up into the center, multiple EMS vans howling into the mix, bike cops… when the horse cops showed up Barbarian Jr. said, “What, are the Blues Brothers in town?”
So we exited up at the corner and went past Cheers (big deal, but y’know) and then down through the edge of the gardens to the T. Little did we know that the cops were wrassling with the suspect on the other side of the pond in that park.
I guess it’s all about being on the right side of the pond.
Saw this on the news last night, heard about it on the radio this morning.
The most surprising thing to me is how everyone characterized the Public Garden as a place filled with drug deals. I must lead a sheltered life – I’ve never seen it as that. If I had to characterize it, I’d call it “Tourist Haven”. Who the hell else goes there except people gawking at the statue of George Washington, or the Ether Dome monument? Oh, and people from the former Ritz Carlton who need a quick stroll.
I’m not saying they’re not there — just that I was blissfully unaware that they were common.
And the swan boats go away at the end of summer. The Ether Monument’s there all year. Along with the “Cast Your Bread Upon the Waters” monument.
I go there once or twice a year to show my grandchildren Jack, Kack, Lack, Mack, Nack, Ouack, Pack, and Quack. (and if you don’t know who they are, you aren’t from Bawstin)
