Somebody mild-mannered and insane . . . Hmmm . . . Have to think about that one.
Adam West?
You had me up to this point. You lost me pretty quickly afterwards, though.
Gripping hand, party politics is part and parcel of a healthy democracy.
The gripping hand is party politics are like God. If it didn’t exist, we’d invent it. If we were living in Libertopia, a bunch of us would get together and start using our collective power to boss around the libertarians. Most of us find that being a member of a tribe is a better deal than being a lone wolf.
Society is the tribe.
Maybe it should be, but part of a tribe is that you feel superior to the fools in the other tribe.
That’s kind of utopian-naive. At very few points in modern (say, post-16th century) history has the entirety of a society, even just a national society, been “the tribe”. Nation-states are just too large and too populated (well, most of them…the exceptions would probably be tiny and homogeneous countries like Andorra, San Marino, or Monaco) to be able to make the whole population one single monkeysphere.
Where? Certainly not here in the United States. Sure, we’re all Americans and we (mostly) stand together against outsiders. But left to ourselves we immediately break down into groups.
No no no -
Republicans, right buttock.
Democrats, left buttock.
The SDMB, right in the middle.

Yep. This.
Only I was gonna put ten bucks down on the OP being a college freshman. Only 18-year-olds who have just had their first taste of grown-upish discourse write this badly, and argue this vacuously.
(Well, either that, or 18-year-olds who have been listening to too much NIN.)
That’s funny. I’d always heard it as
Republicans, right nut
Democrats, left nut
generic you, the dick in the middle.
