Table Talk - I’m not a US citizen, so I’m not as aware of these things as others. What other US political positions are not elected? IIRC, judges are elected, not appointed in the US. We’ve eliminated cabinet and the diplomatic corps - what’s left? Other chiefs of staff? An interesting little problem to chew on…

With the dates we’ve got, this person’s military service could have been in any of WWI, WWII, the Korean War or even Vietnam, and it doesn’t sound like it’s a key point to recognizing this person in any case. Hmph. Off to do some dishes and cogitate.

You’re wrong about our federal judges! They are universally appointed.

IQ: Were you "W"s CIA director?

Not George Tenet.

There are many ways to be “a political/military figure.”

And judges are elected in some states, appointed in others. As etv78 says, all Federal judges are appointed.

IQ1: Were you a Marine Corps test pilot and US Senator who was best known for a different job?
IQ2: Were you responsible for drafting a legal justification for torture?
IQ3: Does a memorial to you and your crew read, in part, “ad astra per aspera”?

Removed. I think Enginerd may have it.

Not John Glenn, Alberto Gonzalez or… dunno the third.

Gus Grissom - the Latin phrase (“a rough road leads to the stars”) is on the Cape Canaveral memorial to the crew of Apollo 1.

DQ: Did you die before 1980?

I’m going to cash in my reserved DQ.

DQ - Are you a member of the US Judiciary system?

May as well use one of my DQs…

Died after 1999?

IQ1: Are you a founding member of the Quintette du Hot Club de France?
IQ2: Are you the title character of a ballet?
IQ3: Were you a Canadian born economic adviser to John F. Kennedy?

Dunno the first; not Giselle; dunno the third. Two DQs?

Giselle is right, from the ballet by Adolphe Adam.

#1. is Stephane Grapelli, who was the violinist in the Quintette. The other famous member was Django Reinhardt, guitarist extraordinaire.

#3. is John Kenneth Galbraith, prolific author and economic advisor to JFK. He was born near St. Thomas, Ontario.

I’ll have to reserve my DQs for a while; I confess myself to be quite stymied.

Never heard of Grapelli. I hadn’t known Galbraith was born in Canada - interesting! A college friend of mine served as a research assistant for him, and found him to be a very smart and courtly old gentleman.

Well, it might help if I spelled his name right - Stéphane Grappelli, here playing with Bucky Pizzarelli.

Thanks, but it wouldn’t have made any difference! I wouldn’t know him under either spelling.
