Still stumped. None of the ETs I can think of fit these clues.

I’d like to emphasize #23. To me at least, the film is much much more well known than the book. In fact, I saw the movie years ago on a re-release initiated to take advantage of a resurgence in the lead actor’s popularity, but it was only when confirming my answer to #5 that I found out it was based on a book.

That’s all the DQs, so get in your Firstname Lastname guesses by 6 pm PDT tomorrow, July 1
Wildass guess:
Are you the lead character from The Man Who Fell to Earth?
That’s a really nice guess in any case.
Your wild ass has served you well because
YES!! I am Thomas Jerome Newton
the titular Man Who Fell to Earth, played by David Bowie in the 1976 feature film by Nicholas Roeg, and apparently played by Bill Nighy in the recent Showtime sequel series.
Another thing that surprised me when finding out about the book was that the author was American. The film is very European, with a British director and star, so I assumed the book would have been British as well. The 1983 re-issue I saw played art houses and had restored 20 minutes (some full frontal male nudity among other things) that was cut by the US distributor to get an R-rating and was cashing in on Bowie’s increased popularity in the wake of his Let’s Dance album.
The book is by Walter Tevis, an author I’ve never heard of. But 3 of his other works have quite popular screen adaptations. The Paul Newman two-fer The Hustler and its sequel The Color of Money, as well as the recent Netflix hit The Queen’s Gambit
Congratulations Elendil_s_Heir, and go ahead and start the July thread a day early.
I’ve heard of the movie but never saw it. I didn’t know about the TV series either. I have read The Queen’s Gambit.
Very nice choice, CROHG!
Great job, EH!
Thanks, CFOHG! Good one. I’ve never seen the whole movie, just scenes from it, but it fit the clues already given, I thought. And I had no idea the same guy wrote The Queen’s Gambit!
I’m on the road now, and will start the next round - and a new thread - tomorrow.
Good one, EH!
Congrats!
Never ever would have gotten it.
Thanks.
