No, I am not Winfield Scott?
No, and no guess. Sleeping on these didn’t help. Much as I have always longed to come up with something useful while dreaming, it never seems to work out for me.
No, I am not Stu Sutcliffe?
No, I am not Mr. Smith, the famous author.
Lewis and Clark hired a french fur trapper named Charbonneau to guide them through the Louisiana territory- he was assisted by his wife, was the famed Shoshone Indian Sacagawea, who appeared on the dollar coin.
The Small Faces were one of England’s biggest bands, in the Sixties. They took the name because they were all very short guys (all 5’ 6" or less). When much taller Rod Stewart replaced Steve Marriott on vocals, they had to drop the word “Small,” and became just the Faces.

Not Winfield Scott, but William H. Seward, Lincoln’s future Secretary of State.
I guess we don’t need any more IQs. I can’t figure out who the guy is from the answers provided so far, so whoever wants to ask our final DQ, go ahead. I’m thinking it’s either a sculptor or an early movie actor.
Did Willem Dafoe get an Oscar nomination for playing you?
IQ: Were you known as ‘The Velvet Gentleman’ in the Parisian music scene in the early 20th century?
Are those supposed to be DQs? 'Cause we don’t get no more IQs.
Beg pardon, I may have misunderstood. I thought we got one more DQ, and that it still has to be earned. After we have 20 answers to DQs, then we’re stuck trying to figure out who this is with what we’ve got. That’s the basis on which I submitted my last IQ, in any case…
And I can’t tell if I’m just reading too much into this ‘artiste/broadly defined’ thing. I certainly haven’t figured it out - does that mean ‘not very good at a standard art form’ or does it mean ‘an innovator whose artistic endeavour turned out to be a dead end’? Colour me puzzled, though I’m happy to take a swing at it.
I earned our last DQ with my Seward question. If you have a final killer DQ to ask, go ahead.
Killer DQ? That’s a pretty heavy responsibility among these tricky and clever minds - I’ll see what I can come up with as I walk to the library and back…
I meant neither, but rather that it is an “art” in the sense that it is sometimes styled “the ________ arts”, which leaves many things open but at least makes a few things unlikely.
I’m also not sure what I am supposed to do now, but I will guess Satie for the music question and Simon the Apostle for Defoe (though I think he was actually Jesus in that thing).
Willem Dafoe didn’t get the Oscar nomination for “Last Temptation of Christ.” He got it for “Shadow of the Vampire,” in which he played Max Schreck, the star of silent horror film “Nosferatu.”
Side talk: astorian - do you have an idea? I’m stumped; if it were down to me, I’d do a ‘hail Mary’ (like ‘Were you born in France?’ or ‘Were you born in a German-speaking country?’.) to try to nail down the nationality , but if you have a better thought, you jump on in.
Side conversation for the last DQ:
We’ve got the hint about “the ____ arts”. Culinary? A famous chef perhaps? I can’t think of any that meet all the other DQ responses though.
The “dark” arts? An occultist along the lines of Aleister Crowley? Or a famous medium? Not a stage magician since DQ#18 rules that out.
It seems that nailing down the “broadly speaking” art form would be the biggest help, but we’ve only got one shot. Guessing wrong and getting a “no” leaves us stuck where we are.
Whatever. I’m stumped.
I got nuthin’- sorry, guys.
Well, I got nothin’, neither, but we’re not going to know the answer until we’ve all taken a stab at it…
DQ: Were you known for your skills in the culinary arts?
