I’m considering purchasing a Chevy Monty Carlo, and I’m curious if any Dopers have had any positive or negative experiences with them in the last several years.

I just want to point out that a new Monte Carlo is basically a 2 door Lumina. That maybe a good thing or bad thing to you, but it needs to be mentioned. You can name it “Monte Carlo” and you can add a bunch of plastic, but that still dont make a Lumina a sports car. It makes a Lumina look like a fake, boy racer sports car. If thats your bag, then enjoy.

Actually the Monte Carlo is a two-door Impala, which is still based on the GM W-body (I think) but is a much better vehicle than the Lumina ever was. (Not that that’s saying much, admittedly).
That being said, I drove a 2000 Impala LS from Harrisburg, PA to New Orleans two summers ago and was very favorably impressed. I’m a longtime Taurus owner, but if the Impala had been around when I bought my last Taurus I would have gone for it in a heartbeat.
As for the Monte, a very good friend of mine has owned 2000 and 2001 Monte Carlos. He’s a 31-year-old IT guy who lives at home with his folks and has nothing else to spend his money on, so he traded in his almost new Monte SS at state inspection time last year and took advantage of the interest-free financing GM was offering.
He loves his Monte Carlo. For an average American plain vanilla car it’s not bad.
