Bow before me, mere mortals, for I have created life!

Oh, they are red, and shiny, and round as tiny pumpkins and they’re mine mine mine mine! Mwahahahaaa!

Ahem.
Tomatoes, that is. Anyone else having some success in the gardening issue this year? Seems conditions were just about perfect here.

I’ve been harvesting oodles of “Sungold” cherry tomatoes already. They’re a new supersweet hybrid and are all the rage among the foodies here in the bay area. Although they are very productive, they’re pretty susceptible to blight.

I’ve also planted “Celebrity”, an early red hybrid which succeeds consistently for me year after year. They’re just starting to redden and I should start to pick the first few this weekend.

What tomato garden would be complete without gobs of basil? I’ve got regular green basil and purple opal basil, and it’s all growing as vigorously as a bunch of very pretty weeds. Also in the herb reserve are chives, thyme, tarragon, parsley and rosemary.

Har, maybe this weekend I’ll serve up the first tomato/garlic/basil bruschetta of the season.

I have a large number of tomatoes growing, but they are all bright green, despite having had weeks to ripen. However, I have grown some nice beets, peas and lettuce.

I love this thread!
So far we have enjoyed eating the potatoes, onions, carrots, cucumbers and zucchini we have planted. We have a ton of green tomatoes and will be having bell peppers pretty soon. I ate all the radishes I planted.

In my tiny 4’ x 4’ garden, my tomato plant has given us 5 tomatoes so far. A volunteer BS Simpson lettuce plant has given us a couple of salads. My chive patch gives us more than we can use. The new oregano and rosemary plants are growing fast enough to flavor our Italian dishes. The thyme in the garden died last year, but the thyme plants by the patio and the ash tree are going strong.

All winter long I have provided nourishement for my one surviving capsicum plant. The capsicum, whilst not large, looked fine.

In the middle of the night a stinking possum came and ate one half of it. I’d like to choke it. I mean, I can buy capsicums for next to nothing. But it’s not the same.

Ooo! Me, me, me! It never even occured to me to talk about my gardening success here! Thanks for starting this thread!

Can you tell I’m excited?

I live in an apartment, see. So this year I determined I was going to be a green thumb type of person. I cleaned up my balcony, and I have tons of stuff in pots out there!

Let’s see…

Herbs:
Thyme, Basil (2 types), Coriander, Oregano. I have been harvesting these all summer.

Flowers:
Jacob’s Lader (love it!), a gorgeous hibiscus that blooms regularly, some happy-go-lucky marigolds, and some sort of yellow flower that someone gave me as a gift.

Veggies:
Bell Peppers (Flowers only, can’t wait!), Tomatoes (not red yet).

And two ivys that are about three feet long already!

I was never a garden type person, and I’m so proud of myself this year I could just burst. Oh that’s not even to mention the bamboo plant that’s growing inside (because the sun burns it).

I’ve turned into a crazy garden person; I talk to my plants, sing to them. I have all kinds of plans for next year!

Anybody else here think of the movie Attack Of The Killer Tomatos ?

I live in an apartment with no outdoor area in which to grow anything. So when I decided to try to grow a tomato plant, I didn’t know what kind of luck I would have. I planted a Celebrity tomato in a pot and put it in the warmest window, and now it’s 3.5 feet tall (as tall as the window) and has 3 almost-ripe tomatoes and one baby tomato. Yay! I also have a mini herb garden in another window with regular and thai basil, marjorum, thyme, sage, mexican oregano, and regular oregano. I also have a rosemary plant and a mint plant. Mmmm, I loves me some fresh herbs.

You all suck.

Here in the Frozen North, we’ve had a decidedly cool summer. Around the fourth of July, it was in the 50s all week.

My tomatos are about 1" taller than when I planted them in June. One of the plants died.

My basil is doing about the same. One plant died.

My dogs ate the ornamental plants on the back deck.

Gardening is not a good thing this year.

Our “metal garden” is called such as there is a metal cage over every plant.

I’ve affectionately redubbed it the “medal garden” which speaks for itself. I am munching on a huge delicious chemical free green pepper as I type.

whoops wipe, wipe

Here in Deep South Texas, the weather is either hot or hotter, so I have experimented with an all herb garden. The parsley and coriander have bolted, the French tarragon failed to thrive, the basil is still looking good, the Rosemary, lavender, chives, oregano, thyme and lemon grass love this weather and are growing like, well, weeds. I also have a small bay tree started. I love to use my own herbs when cooking.

(hijack)
UP, eh. I’m assuming the nickname is still the same and you mean Upper Peninsula. I used to live just outside of Detroit, and boy, did we have stuff to say about UP’ers. It would go like this:

“You’re from Michigan?”
“Yeah.”
“Sorry. Where in Michigan?”
“Near Detroit.”
“Oh. Sorry.”
“That’s OK, at least it’s not the UP.”
(/end hijack)

Anyway, have you thought about moving at least some of them indoors into the warm sunlight? The basil at least. Also, you could probably move them all indoors at night to make them feel better.

Front walkway flower bed:
Two rosemary shrubs and two lavender shrubs! Both huge and in need of pruning. I’ve already harvested once, and I made lavender jelly!

Back yard herb garden:
Cucumbers (made four jars of pickles already), cayenne peppers (have a huge string on them drying right now), garlic (also in the pickles), tiny ornamental pumpkins (fun!), basil(harvested recently for fresh pesto), oregano, lemon balm, bee balm, dill, Provençal lavender, jasmine, purple cone flower, spearmint, peppermint, creeping thyme, sage, citronella scented geraniums, pineapple sage, and fennel.

I’ve been quite pleased with my garden this year, and we plan on doing some expansion work this winter.

FB

hmmmm. From the title, I expected to find a pregnancy announcement.

roflmao.

Here in the UP, we have things to say about Trolls. It goes like this:

“You’re from Michigan?”
“I’m from the UP”
“Sorry, Where in Michigan?”
“The UP, above the bridge, forests, trees, lakes.”
“Oh cool, at least it’s not Detroit”

Really, MOST summers the basil and tomatos grow just fine. This summer has been cold though. And honestly, despite the lack of gardening, I don’t want to live anywhere else in the whole world!

Ooops that was me, Athena… posting from booka’s machine. :smack:

I once made a living, reproducing cell out of some long amino acid chains, protocelluar membranes, and a couple of strands of RNA.

Me too, me too!

So far: parsley, celery, all kinds of pepper (including jalapeños), oregano, bay leave, basil, eggplants, rosemary, cucumber and coriander. And now I am seeing how far I can go with a lime tree and a papaya tree.

The amazing thing is that we don’t have a garden. We occupy the two top floors of the building and have outdoor space at the top.

So… can I grow lime and papaya trees on a pot? They haven’t died yet.

Lavender jelly! That sounds great.
I haven’t had to buy tomatos for two months or so. I’ve also got a ton of herbs on the back porch, but my squash is kind of sad this year. I had strawberries and blackberries for a while, but not too many. Hopefully next year will be better.
